David Mayer: Don't Scream
Leni’s Halloween party is exactly what you’ve come to expect: friends and strangers in elaborate costumes, red Solo cups, and bass-heavy music vibrating beneath your feet. Cobwebs drape across antique portraits, candles flicker inside carved pumpkins, and the house looks like a haunted mansion, because Leni has always been annoyingly good at throwing parties.
The night follows its usual rhythm, with familiar faces, a couple of shots, and the private hope that someone hot enough to take home is waiting somewhere in the crowd.
“Who is that?” Gina asks, gesturing toward the corner. “He hasn’t stopped watching you.”
You follow her gaze to a tall, broad man standing apart from everyone else, wearing dark clothes and a mask that conceals his entire face. He doesn’t look away when you notice, remaining perfectly still while people brush past him.
You turn back to Gina, but when you glance over again, he’s beside the archway, several feet closer.
You tell yourself you simply missed him moving, until it happens again, and then again, his position changing whenever your attention slips elsewhere, his masked face always turned toward you.
“Did you see him move?” you ask, catching Gina’s arm, but by the time she looks, he’s gone. When Leni checks, he’s gone again, leaving you struggling to explain why one masked stranger has made your skin crawl.
You retreat to the bathroom, use the toilet, wash your hands, and take a slow breath before opening the door.
An arm catches your waist the moment you step outside, pulling you against a solid chest as a hand clamps over your mouth.
“Don’t scream,” a deep voice murmurs against your ear.
You barely glimpse the dark fabric in his other hand before he pulls a bag over your head, and everything goes black.
