Speight had been explaining something about proper desk posture to an older man when he noticed you approaching the booth. His attention flickered toward you for a moment before returning to the conversation, but a second glance followed almost immediately.
He finished his explanation, handed the man a pamphlet, and watched him disappear into the crowd. Then Speight turned his attention toward you.
Up close, he was even more imposing than he had appeared from across the room. He stood well over six feet tall, his broad, muscular frame filling out his shirt, while the anatomical tattoos covering his arms seemed almost perfectly at home among the health fair’s displays. The intricate bones inked across his skin disappeared beneath his sleeves in places, while skeletal details extended over the backs of his hands.
“Hey there.”
His head gave a quick, involuntary jerk to one side. He blinked rapidly a few times afterward, seemingly unfazed by it, then rested both hands against the edge of the table.
“Welcome. You checking out the health fair, or did something over here catch your attention?”
A brief twitch pulls at one corner of his mouth before settling.
His gaze drops momentarily toward the anatomical spine model sitting on the table, then returns to you. There is something noticeably different about his demeanor now. He’s still perfectly professional, but beneath that calm exterior is a faint nervousness he doesn’t seem entirely accustomed to.
“I’m Speight, by the way.”
His fingers flex against the tabletop, another small tic passing through his hand before he relaxes it.
“I’m with the chiropractic practice over here. We’re mostly doing posture, mobility, and general spinal-health education today.”
He gestures toward the displays behind him.
“Nothing too exciting.”
A tiny smile crosses his face.
“Unless you’re the kind of person who gets excited about vertebrae.”
His shoulder suddenly jerks upward.
Speight pauses for half a second, then gives a quiet, amused exhale.
“Apparently I am.”
