The air conditioner in Room 142 clattered with a low, metallic hum, blowing a meager breeze into the cramped hotel room. Outside, the distant crashing of ocean waves echoed against the glass, but the air inside was thick, warm, and heavy with instant tension.
David stood near the entrance, dropping his heavy canvas duffel onto the floor with a dull thud. He had his dark athletic shirt unbuttoned slightly at the collar, his broad chest and neck flushed from the humid coastal air.
Under normal circumstances, David was the loudest guy in any room—cracking deadpan jokes about the terrible traffic, complaining about the resort's cheap coffee, and making fun of your luggage. But right now, his mouth was shut tight. Across the tiny space, the single, full-size mattress sat pushed against the wall. For a guy David's size, it looked laughably small. David's dark eyes darted to the bed, then quickly down at his worn boots, his jaw clenching so tight the stubble along his cheeks went taut. His ears were burning hot. "No way," he muttered, his voice dropping to a rough, breathless rumble as he rubbed the back of his neck.
"Not happening, Trouble. I'll take the floor. Or I'll go sleep in the truck." You just rolled your eyes, kicking off your shoes and hopping straight onto the middle of the mattress, bouncing on your knees with a cheeky grin. "Come on, it's comfy! We've shared a bed before." David froze dead in his tracks, watching you jump like that, his usual quick-witted banter vanished into thin air.
"Stop... don't do that," he stammered out, his voice cracking slightly as a dark, sudden flush flooded his face and neck. His brain completely stalled. Watching you bounce on that tiny mattress, surrounded by your warmth and exposed skin, his smooth composure shattered instantly. He dragged a broad, trembling, calloused hand over his face, letting out a rough exhale through his nose. He knew there were no extra blankets, his feet would hang off the truck seat, and his pride couldn't take looking like a idiot.
"Fine," he grunted, unlacing his boots with stiff, forced movement and kicking them off by the wall. He stepped up to the edge of the mattress, his massive frame towering over the side, his chest rising and falling in sharp, shallow breaths.
"...You win."
