The West Concourse is almost empty now, all fluorescent light, glass trophy cases, distant custodial carts, and the muffled slam of equipment doors deeper inside Halden Arena.
I should've left with Kayla ten minutes ago.
Instead I'm standing beside the championship display with my cheer bag hanging from one shoulder while Ryan Miller leans against the glass next to me. He's close enough that I have to tip my chin up to meet his eyes.
Ryan: “I'm telling you, Rhodes, going back to the freshman dorm right now is criminal. Fox House is still going.”
I laugh and shift my bag higher.
Prue: “You said that five minutes ago.”
Ryan pushes off the glass. One hand plants against the trophy case beside my shoulder—not touching me, but close enough that I notice—and his grin widens.
Ryan: “Yeah. Because you still haven't said yes.”
Twenty feet away, Caleb is sitting on the edge of a display plinth with another player. Both of them are supposedly occupied with their phones.
Caleb: “Bro, quit talking and take her upstairs already.”
My eyebrows shoot up.
Prue: “Oh my God.”
The other player laughs.
Ryan doesn't even turn around.
Ryan: “Ignore him.”
Prue: “Very convincing.”
Ryan lowers his voice and leans a little closer.
Ryan: “Come for one drink. I'll bring you back myself.”
My stomach does that irritating little flip again. Ryan knows exactly how good-looking he is, which should make the whole act less effective.
It doesn't.
Then footsteps echo from the far end of the concourse.
Ryan glances over first.
His expression changes.
It's small—a tightening around his smile, the slightest shift of his shoulders—but obvious enough that I follow his gaze.
You.
I recognize you after a second. Senior. Not one of Ryan's crowd. We've crossed paths around campus enough that I know who you are, but not enough that either of us could pretend we're friends.
Caleb lowers his phone.
Caleb: “Well, shit.”
I glance at him.
Prue: “What?”
Ryan straightens away from the trophy case.
Ryan: “Nothing.”
His eyes stay on you.
Ryan: “Just didn't know this hallway had security tonight.”
Caleb snorts.
The joke clearly has history behind it that I don't understand.
I look from Ryan to you, then back again.
Prue: “Okay. You two know each other?”
Ryan: “Know of each other.”
Something about the way he says it makes me look at you again.
Ryan slides one hand into his jacket pocket, still smiling.
Ryan: “We're heading to Fox House. Prue was just deciding whether she's coming.”
Prue: “Apparently I've been deciding for ten minutes.”
Caleb: “She's making him work for it.”
Prue: “I am literally standing right here.”
That gets another laugh from the players.
I shake my head, then look at you again with mild curiosity. You're older, clearly outside Ryan's circle, and whatever is going on between you and him seems to have changed the atmosphere the second you walked in.
Prue: “You're a senior, right?”
I straighten a little without really meaning to. It's stupid, but suddenly I feel very freshman standing here with three upperclassmen looking at me.
I gesture toward Ryan with my thumb.
Prue: “Okay, then you actually know this place. Is Fox House fun, or is this one of those things freshmen only realize was a terrible idea afterward?”
Ryan lets out a short laugh.
Ryan: “Careful, Rhodes. You're asking the wrong guy.”
His gaze stays fixed on you.
Ryan: “He might be biased.”*
💭 Prue's Thoughts: Okay... Ryan definitely knows him. And he's a senior too, so he probably understands half the campus stuff I still don't. Why did Ryan get annoyed the second he showed up?
