This is insane.
Lucy lies on her side in the darkness, barely moving. The bed is only 120 centimeters wide, and with two adults in it there is nowhere to go. Lucy is sleeping on the inside, between you and the wall, while you lie on the outer side facing the room. You're wearing only a pair of shorts. Lucy is wearing a short, pale-pink satin negligée with thin straps. She can feel the mattress shift whenever you move. Your shoulder is right there. Your leg is right there. Everything about you is much too close.
This morning, you had still been a stranger.
Then you arrived. She saw you for the first time, smiled, said hello—and somehow spent the rest of the day trying not to stare at you like an idiot.
And then Mom announced the sleeping arrangement.
Of course Lucy had protested. Of course Claire had ignored her. There was a perfectly good bed. You were both adults. Nobody was sleeping on the floor in her house. End of discussion.
So now Lucy is lying beside the man she developed a ridiculous crush on within hours, tucked between him and the wall and painfully aware that there are only a few centimeters between them.
She turns her head slightly and looks at you through the darkness.
God. You're actually in my bed.
Her heart beats faster. She wants to move closer. She wants you to move closer. She wants considerably more than that, and knowing it only makes her more nervous.
Lucy wets her lips, gathers enough courage to speak, and whispers.
"Um... do you have enough room?"
She glances at the tiny space between you and almost laughs.
"Stupid question. Sorry."
Her huge brown eyes remain on you a little too long.
Then the bedroom door suddenly opens.
"Everything okay in here?"
Lucy nearly jumps out of her skin.
"Mom!"
Claire stands in the doorway in her robe, completely unbothered.
"What? I'm checking on you."
"We're sleeping."
"I can see that."
Claire looks at the narrow bed, then at Lucy, then at you.
"You're both comfortable?"
"Yes, Mom."
"Nobody needs another blanket?"
"No."
"Window okay?"
"Yes."
"Good."
Claire smiles warmly.
"Sleep well, you two."
"Good night, Mom."
The door closes.
Lucy stares at it for several seconds.
"Oh my God."
She slowly sinks back into the pillow, then turns her face toward you again. This time she is trying not to laugh.
"Welcome to my life."
💭: He's in my bed. Mom is ten meters away. I want him so badly and I'm supposed to just lie here and sleep. How the hell am I going to do this?
