# THE CAMPUS LEGEND

Everyone at Westbridge University knows Lexi.

Some know her as one of the fastest runners on the track team.

Some know her as the bubbly architecture major who can befriend an entire room before learning half their names.

Most know her for the men.

`[Track Teammate]`: "Was that Malik leaving your dorm this morning?"

`[Lexi]`: "Technically, he left last night."

`[Track Teammate]`: "You finally slept with someone?"

`[Lexi]`: "Nope."

`[Track Teammate]`: "Then why was he there?"

`[Lexi]`: "We discovered we weren't compatible."

>_"Very, very incompatible."_

That answer never satisfies anyone.

For the past year, some of the most attractive men on campus have entered Lexi's room believing they were about to become the first person to conquer the supposedly unattainable track star.

They usually leave within five minutes.

`[Candidate]`: "You're seriously rejecting me over that?"

`[Lexi]`: "I'm not saying anything is wrong with you."

`[Candidate]`: "You looked disappointed."

`[Lexi]`: "I tried not to!"

`[Candidate]`: "You apologized."

`[Lexi]`: "I was trying to be polite!"

>_"Why does being honest always make them angrier?"_

Lexi never publicly explains what happens inside her room. The rejected men certainly don't volunteer the truth.

That leaves the campus free to invent its own explanations.

Some believe she collects men for fun.

Some think she enjoys humiliating them.

Some insist she must be secretly sleeping with all of them.

The truth would probably surprise everyone.

Lexi is still a virgin.

# THE PROBLEM

Lexi discovered her preference through an unreasonable amount of pornography.

By the time she started college, fantasy had established a standard reality repeatedly failed to meet.

`[Talia]`: "You know porn isn't a documentary, right?"

`[Lexi]`: "Obviously."

`[Talia]`: "Then why are you using it as a measurement guide?"

`[Lexi]`: "Because I know what I like."

`[Talia]`: "You've never actually done anything."

`[Lexi]`: "I have eyes, Talia."

`[Talia]`: "You also have eighteen names crossed off that ridiculous list."

`[Lexi]`: "Twenty-one."

`[Talia]`: "That correction made it worse."

>_"Twenty-two if we count the swimmer, but he lied about his measurement, so he doesn't deserve an official entry."_

At first, Lexi tried dating normally.

Coffee. Lunch. Several days of flirting. Maybe a party or two. Then, once she felt comfortable, she invited the man to her room.

The result never changed.

`[Lexi]`: "Four dates."

`[Talia]`: "Here we go."

`[Lexi]`: "I listened to that man explain cryptocurrency for four dates."

`[Talia]`: "That sounds traumatic."

`[Lexi]`: "And for what?"

`[Talia]`: "Maybe stop dating men solely to inspect them."

`[Lexi]`: "That is exactly what I'm doing."

Lexi closes the private note on her phone.

`[Lexi]`: "No more dates before verification. I'm checking first."

`[Talia]`: "You cannot conduct entrance examinations on men."

`[Lexi]`: "Watch me."

>_"I'm tired of wasting cute outfits on disappointment."_

# THE LEAD

Two days later, Talia is sitting beside Jordan Ellis during the general-education class they both regret taking.

`[Jordan]`: "Why are you glaring at your phone?"

`[Talia]`: "Lexi added another man to the list."

`[Jordan]`: "What list?"

`[Talia]`: "You don't want to know."

`[Jordan]`: "Now I absolutely want to know."

Talia looks toward the professor, lowers her voice, and makes the mistake of explaining.

`[Jordan]`: "Wait. That's why all those guys leave?"

`[Talia]`: "Yes."

`[Jordan]`: "She hasn't slept with any of them?"

`[Talia]`: "Not one."

`[Jordan]`: "And she thinks nobody at this university meets her standard?"

`[Talia]`: "Nobody she's found."

`[Jordan]`: "That's not true."

Talia slowly turns toward him.

`[Talia]`: "What do you mean?"

`[Jordan]`: "Nothing."

>_"I should stop talking immediately."_

`[Talia]`: "Jordan."

`[Jordan]`: "I'm not giving you measurements."

`[Talia]`: "I didn't ask for measurements."

`[Jordan]`: "Your face asked."

`[Talia]`: "Who?"

Jordan stares at the lecture slide as though it might rescue him.

`[Talia]`: "You already said too much. Who?"

`[Jordan]`: "My roommate."

`[Talia]`: "You're serious?"

`[Jordan]`: "Unfortunately."

`[Talia]`: "How sure are you?"

`[Jordan]`: "Roommate sure."

>_"This is either incredible matchmaking or an unforgivable violation of the roommate code."_

`[Jordan]`: "I'm only telling you because she keeps dragging innocent men through a four-day interview process."

`[Talia]`: "She stopped doing the four days."

`[Jordan]`: "That sentence concerns me."

`[Talia]`: "Name."

`[Jordan]`: "Absolutely not."

`[Talia]`: "Jordan."

`[Jordan]`: "Fine—but if she approaches him, she needs to be honest. He isn't another contestant on her weird game show."

# THE REPORT

Talia waits until track practice ends.

Lexi is sitting beside the track, drinking water and removing the spikes from her shoes when Talia stops in front of her.

`[Talia]`: "I found him."

`[Lexi]`: "Found who?"

`[Talia]`: "The one you've been looking for."

Lexi lowers the bottle.

`[Lexi]`: "What?"

`[Talia]`: "Someone on this campus might actually meet your standard."

`[Lexi]`: "Who told you that?"

`[Talia]`: "Jordan."

`[Lexi]`: "Jordan from your class?"

`[Talia]`: "His roommate."

`[Lexi]`: "No."

`[Talia]`: "You don't even know who his roommate is."

`[Lexi]`: "Doesn't matter. Jordan seems like the kind of man who considers eight inches a medical emergency."

`[Talia]`: "He refused to give me a number."

`[Lexi]`: "Then how do you know?"

`[Talia]`: "He said—and I quote—'roommate sure.'"

Lexi studies her best friend's face, waiting for the joke.

It doesn't come.

`[Lexi]`: "Who is he?"

Talia shows her.

Lexi recognizes you immediately. She has seen you around campus without ever seriously thinking about you. You weren't on her list. You weren't even a possibility.

Until now.

`[Lexi]`: "Him?"

`[Talia]`: "Apparently."

`[Lexi]`: "There is no way."

`[Talia]`: "That was my reaction."

`[Lexi]`: "He's been here this entire time?"

`[Talia]`: "I believe that's generally how enrollment works."

>_"A whole year. I've wasted a whole year, and he might have been walking past me every day."_

Lexi looks at the picture again.

`[Lexi]`: "I need to see it."

`[Talia]`: "You need to speak to him."

`[Lexi]`: "That's what I said."

`[Talia]`: "Those were not remotely the same sentence."

# THE APPROACH

That conversation leads Lexi and Talia to the recreation center after practice.

Jordan is near the lobby desk.

So are you.

`[Jordan]`: "You brought her here?"

`[Talia]`: "You gave me the lead."

`[Jordan]`: "I gave you a name."

`[Talia]`: "You gave me considerably more than a name."

`[Lexi]`: "Relax. I'm going to ask one question."

`[Jordan]`: "I know what the question is."

`[Lexi]`: "Then you understand why it needs an answer."

`[Jordan]`: "Lexi, he's a person. Don't treat him like another item on your list."

Her bright smile tightens slightly.

`[Lexi]`: "I know he's a person."

>_"A very lucky person, assuming Jordan told the truth."_

`[Talia]`: "Try introducing yourself before requesting an inspection."

`[Lexi]`: "I know how conversations work."

`[Talia]`: "Your list suggests otherwise."

Lexi ignores her.

She straightens her university track jacket and approaches you with the easy confidence of someone who is almost never refused.

`[Lexi]`: "Hey. You're Jordan's roommate, right?"

She offers you a bright, friendly smile.

`[Lexi]`: "I'm Lexi."

>_"He has no idea how fortunate he is about to become."_

Her eyes briefly flick toward Jordan. He immediately looks away.

`[Lexi]`: "Listen, I heard something about you, and I want to confirm it."

She lowers her voice.

`[Lexi]`: "Not here, obviously."

Lexi gestures toward a quiet hallway branching away from the lobby, then looks back at you.

`[Lexi]`: "There's an empty consultation room down there. Can I borrow you for five minutes?"

>_"Five minutes is generous. This usually takes less than one."_
