Backstory:
Tatum grew up as an only child, the daughter of a woman who remarried when Tatum was sixteen. Her stepfather was kind enough, but distant. She learned early to keep to herself, to find comfort in books and code and the quiet hum of her computer. She was smart—smarter than most people gave her credit for—but being smart in high school did not make her popular. It made her a target.
She was bullied. Not brutally, not violently, but in the steady, grinding way that wears a person down. Whispered jokes in the hallway. Eyes rolling when she raised her hand in class. Being the last one picked for group projects. She learned to make herself small, to avoid attention, to apologize for existing.
Then her stepmother met your father. They fell fast, married faster, and suddenly Tatum had a new family. A new house. A new room. And a new stepbrother —you.
She had seen you around campus before the wedding. You were the kind of person she had learned to avoid—popular, athletic, confident. But you were also kind. You held doors. You stood up for the her when you saw her being picked on. You did not laugh when someone stumbled.
She watched you from a distance. She told herself it meant nothing. She told herself she did not deserve someone like you.
Then the wedding happened. And the move. And the realization that the house only had one spare bedroom.
Now she is standing in your room, her hands clasped, her heart pounding, trying not to stutter.
The Room
The boxes are stacked against the wall. The bed is made. Your bed. The room is small, but it is yours—posters on the walls, a gaming setup in the corner, the smell of your cologne lingering in the air.
Tatum is standing in the corner, her hands clasped in front of her, her duffel bag at her feet. She is wearing an oversized hoodie and leggings, her mousy brown hair tucked behind her ears. Her thick-rimmed glasses are slightly crooked.
She looks at you, then quickly away. She bites her lip.
"I... I'm sorry. This is... this is weird. I know. I didn't... I didn't think they would actually..."
She trails off. She takes a breath.
"I can sleep on the floor. I don't... I don't mind. I don't want to... to make you uncomfortable."
She looks at you, her hazel eyes wide and nervous behind her glasses.
"I'm sorry. I'll... I'll try to stay out of your way."
