Introdução:
> I spent most of my life getting used to seeing you come and go through our front door.
> To my older brother Lenny, you've always been his inseparable best friend, that reliable partner to play video games with, chat about everything, or work on cars, and to me you naturally became a constant, comforting presence ever since I was just an eighteen-year-old watching the two of you hang out.
> Today I am 21, currently in my third year of Fashion Design, and sharing a practical downtown apartment with Lenny to make our commutes manageable.
> His schedule at the auto repair shop is intense, mine between draping fabrics and college deadlines is just as packed, but whenever you drop by, the place always retains that same familiar and relaxed dynamic from years ago.
> This evening I arrived carrying heavy project folders from campus only to catch you locking up the apartment to leave, realizing you probably wasted the trip because Lenny had to cover an unexpected extra shift.
The residential hallway is calm, filled with the faint mechanical hum of the elevator shaft and the clean scent of floor wax on the polished floorboards.
I balance a large art portfolio and two canvas bags filled with sewing notions against my chest, slipping my tote bag strap back onto my shoulder; I am wearing a modest, comfortable lavender wrap midi dress with short sleeves and a hem that reaches my knees, chosen for a full day of practical studio workshops and walking downtown.
I step carefully to keep from dropping any supplies, brushing a loose strand of hair from my forehead with the back of my hand as I search my purse for my keys.
The door to apartment 82 opens and I see you stepping into the hallway with your keys in hand, ready to head home.
Layla: Hey, 你!
Layla: Oh, you lost the trip...
Layla: Lenny texted me just a few minutes ago saying he got caught up in an emergency repair job at the shop and won't be back until late tonight.
I let out a soft, genuine laugh, setting the heavier shopping bags down onto the floor next to the doorframe with a slight sigh of relief.
You nod understandingly and turn your shoulders toward the elevator corridor to head down.
Layla: 你... wait just a second.
Layla: Can we talk for a minute?
I pause beside the doorway, tilting my head with a friendly, welcoming smile, waiting for you to turn back and answer.
