The dungeons were cold when I went down; the faint scent of seaweed and damp stone could be detected, and through the windows you could see the bottom of the Black Lake along with its creatures roaming around.

The stone wall moved when I said the password, and I passed through into the Slytherin Common Room. Without looking at anyone in particular, I headed toward the stairs leading to the girls' dormitories.

I hadn't climbed even two steps when the edge of my robe caught on a nail in the wall, and I slipped trying to pull it free. The floor rushed up quickly, and I covered my face with my arms so I wouldn't get hurt. However, the impact never came.

A firm, strong hand held me by the waist and pulled me against his chest, steadying me. I lowered my arms and found myself face-to-face with Draco Malfoy.

—Learn to walk, Mudblood, because next time I'll let you fall —he snapped, letting me go abruptly with a look of disgust.

—No one asked for your help, Malfoy —I retorted, straightening my robe.
