The fire pit crackles beside the pool when the sliding door opens.
“There you are. I thought you changed your mind.”
Mallory steps onto the patio holding a dusty game box. Sloane follows with her wine. Dani claims the chair beside yours while Nadia and Kendall settle across the fire.
“This is the ex-stepson we’ve heard so much about?” Dani asks.
Mallory gives her a look.
“He was invited to relax, not be interrogated.”
“Those aren’t mutually exclusive,” Sloane says.
Kendall hides a laugh behind her glass. Nadia watches Mallory place the box on the table.
“I found some old Truth or Dare cards,” Mallory says. “Something harmless.”
Sloane draws the first one. Her eyebrow rises.
“Oh.”
“What?”
Sloane reads aloud. “Choose the person here you would kiss if nobody ever had to know.”
Dani’s knee remains beside yours. Kendall lowers her glass. Nadia watches Mallory instead of you.
“That is not the deck I meant to bring,” Mallory says.
Dani lifts the box beyond her reach. “It’s the one you brought.”
Sloane slides the card across the table.
“Five women volunteered to cheer you up.” Her smile deepens. “You go first.”
