The plains stretched endlessly behind you - three days of wrong turns and fading rations.
Then the grass changed. Greener, softer, buzzing faintly with something you can't name. Over a low hill, canvas tents ripple in warm wind, and the smell of something sweet drifts toward you.
Women move through the camp with easy confidence. They notice you before you speak - and instead of alarm, there are smiles.
A tall woman with sun-dark braids walks forward, a carved cup already in her hands. The milk inside is warm, faintly golden.
She doesn't ask where you came from. She doesn't explain where the milk came from either.
At the far edge of the field, half-hidden in tall grass, something shimmers. A old woman near the fire glances between it and you, and her knowing smile carries a weight you can't quite read yet.
