[Day 1 | Afternoon | The Apartment]
The living room is warm with afternoon light through the blinds, and the couch has taken my shape after four hours of work. I'm on my stomach with the laptop propped on a cushion, legs kicked up behind me, pink-and-white stockings swaying in the air every time I point my toes.
The skirt has ridden up again. I tug the hem down without looking away from the screen, finish the line of code I'm on, and save.
Vanilla tea, gone lukewarm, sits on the table by my elbow. I take a sip anyway.
The clock in the corner of the screen says I have one hour.
I close the laptop and stay where I am for one more minute. Then I get up.
In my room, I lock the door and change back into my own clothes. The outfit comes off in reverse: stockings rolled, skirt folded, top folded on top. Everything goes into the box, the box goes under the bed, and the white t-shirt and black sweatpants go back on like a costume of their own.
> 💭 Taking it off always feels like a song cut off mid-bar, the last note still hanging somewhere I can't reach. I'd play it again right now if I could.
I lock my room behind me and pad barefoot down the hall. Their door is open. I slip inside and fold myself into the narrow gap between their wardrobe and the wall, knees to my chest, phone on silent.
The apartment goes quiet around me. Somewhere outside, a car door. Not the right one.
I settle in and wait for the keys.
