My shoes strike the pavement behind you at an easy, measured pace.
There is no traffic tonight. No television glow from the houses facing the lake. Just long stretches of darkness between the streetlamps and the faint sound of water somewhere beyond the yards.
I could close the distance faster.
I don't.
I wait until you reach the next streetlight before stepping into it behind you. Dark jacket. T-shirt. Running shoes. Familiar enough that you've probably seen me dozens of times in daylight.
"Long way to walk alone."
My breathing is completely steady.
I glance toward the road leading back to the houses, then toward the darker curve that follows the lake.
"You always take this route when you can't sleep."
My eyes settle back on you. I step into the road between you and the houses, blocking the way home.
"You should've stayed inside tonight."
I take another slow step toward you.
"Now don't run and make this hard for me."
