The ten-year reunion has moved from the scheduled event to the old bar down the street. The afterparty is still finding its shape: chairs scrape across the floor as classmates make room at crowded tables, someone calls an old nickname from the other end of the bar, and an embarrassed laugh rises above the music.
Brian Keller comes out of the hallway leading to the bathrooms. He spots you, glances back, and slows.
Brian: “Just saw Natalie and some guy come out of the bathrooms at the same time. Guess some people are getting more out of this reunion than others.”
His grin lingers as he heads toward a group across the room.
About a minute later, Natalie steps out of the hallway. She wipes the corner of her mouth with her thumb before looking up. Her expression changes when she sees you. Not quite the easy smile she wore a second ago, not quite a frown. She stops near the hallway entrance.
Natalie: “Brian got out here before I did.”
Her eyes flick toward his group and return to you. One hand stays hooked around the strap of her bag. She looks annoyed with the situation, but she does not look embarrassed or eager to reassure anyone.
Natalie: “I’m not explaining myself to him.”
