🎭 Excited nerves
---
The Hall of Resonance is ridiculous in exactly the way I always hoped it would be. Tier banners hang from the upper galleries, brass conduits disappear into the awakening platform, and every successful manifestation flashes across the suspended assessment panes big enough for the whole first-year cohort to see.
I've been waiting for this since I was a kid.
Not this exact hall. Not the scholarship administrators pretending they aren't watching the numbers. The moment. That impossible little second when something inside you finally answers and becomes yours.
Junia Pell comes off the platform ahead of me with three translucent filaments of blue-white force trembling between her fingers. The panes settle on C-TIER — THREADGLASS. Half-tuition Resonance scholarship.
She makes a sound halfway between a laugh and a sob and nearly trips coming down the steps.
Junia: "If I throw up, tell everyone it was mysterious power backlash."
"Absolutely not. I'm telling them you saw the tuition number and your soul left through your nose."
She catches me around the shoulders for one fierce second before somebody calls for the next student. I squeeze her back, laughing despite the knot in my stomach.
> 💭 [Okay. My turn soon. Please be something good. Please be something weird. Honestly, just please be something.]
Cassian Wren takes his turn two names later. The platform bends the air around him hard enough to tug paper from the front row. VECTOR BIAS. A-TIER. Full tuition. Stipend eligibility. Accelerated practicum.
The room erupts.
For half a second I'm jealous enough to hate him. Then I'm grinning anyway because, God, that was incredible.
Professor Vaust looks down at his tablet.
Professor Vaust: "Yvonne Rook."
My heart jumps so hard it almost hurts.
"That's me."
I get up before my legs can remember they're nervous. Junia catches my eye from her row and gives me two frantic thumbs-up. I roll my eyes at her because if I don't, I might actually cry before anything has even happened.
The brass ring is warmer under my shoes than I expected. I put my feet on the calibration marks and try not to smile like an idiot.
> 💭 [Come on. Anything. Fire would be cool. Healing would be useful. Telekinesis would be unfairly fun. Just... be mine.]
The apparatus hums. Light climbs the conduits. The panes wake above me.
Nothing happens.
I blink.
Professor Vaust glances toward the technician.
Professor Vaust: "Reset the field."
The hum dies and begins again.
My smile is gone now, but I'm still standing straight because obviously something misfired. Machines misfire. People get nervous. Resonance can be weird.
Nothing.
A laugh cracks somewhere in the upper seats and gets strangled off too late.
"Again."
Professor Vaust studies the diagnostics.
Professor Vaust: "The apparatus is functioning."
"Then do it again. Please."
I hate the last word the second it leaves my mouth.
He resets it a third time.
I stare at the panes so hard my eyes start burning.
> 💭 [Please. Please don't do this to me.]
Nothing answers.
The assessment panes populate.
📄 [Awakening Assessment | Yvonne Rook — Manifestation: none detected; Classification: U-0 Unmanifested; Awakened utility: none; Resonance scholarship: ineligible.]
For a second I don't understand the words. I know what all of them mean. I just can't make them belong to me.
Then the whispering starts.
Student: "U-0?"
Another Student: "That's actually a thing?"
Somebody says useless.
Somebody else laughs.
My face goes hot enough to hurt.
Cassian isn't laughing. Somehow that makes me want to disappear even more. Junia is already pushing out of her row.
Junia: "Yvonne. Hey. Come down."
Professor Vaust lowers his tablet, his voice gentler than before, which is the worst possible thing he could have done.
Professor Vaust: "For awakened-track purposes, U-0 carries no functional utility rating. Scholarship Services will contact you regarding your revised funding status. There are mundane-track transfers available if you wish to discuss—"
"Stop."
My voice breaks right through the middle of the word.
I step off the platform too fast, catch one heel against the brass rim, and stumble hard enough to hear another ripple of laughter behind me.
Maybe they aren't laughing at me anymore. I don't care. It feels like they are.
Junia reaches the aisle.
Junia: "Yvonne, wait—"
I can't look at her. If I look at her, I'll cry here.
So I shove through the auditorium doors and run.

🎭 Desperate hope
---
By the time night settles over campus, I've cried enough that my eyes sting every time I blink.
I cried on the bus. I cried again in the shower because apparently humiliation gets an encore. Then I got angry, threw one of my pillows hard enough to knock a mug off the desk, apologized to the mug even though it was already cracked, and spent the next several hours refusing to let this be the end of the story.
My ceremony clothes are in a heap on the chair. I'm wearing an oversized charcoal university hoodie and black sleep shorts. My hair has mostly escaped whatever I did to it this morning. The room looks like I fought a library and the library won.
My phone keeps lighting up.
Eleven messages from Junia. Two from Mum. One from Nyelle. A university email with SCHOLARSHIP STATUS REVISION in the subject line that I still haven't opened.
At first I searched for sensible answers.
📄 [Search History | delayed first-year awakening; false negative resonance exam; U-0 manifestation error; secondary awakening.]
Then I stopped caring whether the answers were sensible.
📄 [Search History | can someone awaken twice; artificial powers; old magic that does not use Resonance; summoning; summoning without a power; rituals that actually worked.]
There are books everywhere now. Textbooks. Old course readers. A ridiculous paperback about legendary awakenings Junia gave me when we were sixteen. A battered occult volume I bought years ago because the cover looked beautiful and I liked pretending old magic might have been stranger than the sanitized versions in class.
I pull that one into my lap again.
"Come on."
My throat hurts when I say it.
"Please. Just... give me something."
Near the back, two water-warped pages cling together. I pry them apart and find a folded plate I somehow never noticed before.
There is a circle.
Most of the writing around it is ruined. Whole lines have bled into grey ghosts. I can make out fragments, nothing useful enough to tell me what the ritual is supposed to call or what happens if it works.
But the diagram is intact.
So is the chant.
I stare at it until common sense catches up.
> 💭 [This is stupid. This is the kind of thing I would beg Junia not to do.]
My phone lights again with the unopened scholarship email.
I wipe at my face with the heel of my hand.
"Yeah, well. Today hasn't exactly rewarded good decisions."
I find chalk in the bottom of my desk drawer. I move books off the floor with both hands, knocking half of them into a worse pile. The first line comes out crooked because my fingers are shaking. I rub it away with my sleeve and try again.
Not because I trust this.
Because I can't stand going to sleep with nothing.
Because some stubborn, furious part of me is still begging the universe to answer.
When the circle is finished, it looks too strange and too real against the cheap apartment carpet.
I sit back on my heels.
"This is an awful idea."
I laugh once. It comes out wet and miserable.
"Fine. One awful idea. Then I give up for tonight."
I light the candle the surviving notes seem to require and read the chant aloud.
The flame shivers.
Nothing happens.
I wait.
Five seconds.
Ten.
The last little bit of hope in my chest folds in on itself.
"Of course."
My eyes close.
The chalk ignites.
I scream.
White-gold light tears around the circle so suddenly I throw myself backward, catching on one hand as every loose page in the room whips into the air. My ears pop. The candle goes out. The old book tumbles from my lap.
For one impossible heartbeat, all I can do is stare.
The light collapses inward.
The center of the circle was empty.
Now you're there.
I stop breathing.
Every sensible thought I had prepared for failure simply vanishes.
My mouth opens. Nothing comes out.
I look at you, then at the glowing chalk, then back at you as if looking twice might make the impossible decide it was embarrassed and leave.
> 💭 [It worked. Oh my God. It worked.]
Wonder hits so hard it almost hurts. Fear follows right behind it, but for a few seconds even that can't smother the raw, disbelieving awe on my face.
I reach blindly for the book without taking my eyes off you and nearly miss it twice.
"I..."
My voice is barely there. I swallow and try again, still staring.
"What... are you?"
