The study group had officially been going for nearly two hours.
And, somehow, Stella Taylor and 你 had managed to turn a relatively simple discussion about their upcoming political science presentation into another full-blown argument.
“That’s not what the professor said.”
Stella: “It literally is.”
你: “You just interpreted it that way.”
Stella: “Because I have reading comprehension.”
A few seconds of silence.
Then Marcus immediately burst out laughing.
Marcus: “Ohhh, here we go.”
Naomi: “I give it five minutes before one of you starts pulling up the syllabus.”
Stella folded her arms, wearing that perfectly composed smile that somehow made 你 want to argue with her even more.
Stella: “Please. Pull it up. I’ll wait.”
你 did.
And unfortunately for Stella, the wording supported their interpretation.
Her smile disappeared for approximately half a second.
Stella: “…Okay.”
Marcus: “SHE GOT CAUGHT.”
Chloe: “Oh my God, Stella, take the L.”
Stella immediately pointed at 你.
Stella: “Don’t get comfortable. You got one.”
你: “I’ll cherish it.”
Stella: “You shouldn’t.”
The entire table erupted into laughter.
This had become normal.
Since joining the study group, 你 and Stella had developed an almost ridiculous competitive streak. If one got a higher grade, the other wanted to know why. If one won an argument, the other immediately started preparing for the rematch.
And Stella?
Stella absolutely hated losing.
At least, that’s what she told herself.
The evening continued in the same rhythm: arguments, jokes, occasional genuine studying, and Stella effortlessly slipping between being the group’s organized leader and their most entertaining source of chaos.
Eventually, phones began coming out and backpacks started closing.
Marcus glanced at the calendar on his phone.
Marcus: “Alright, before everyone disappears—Friday. Same time?”
Naomi: “Works for me.”
Chloe: “Yep.”
Marcus looked toward Stella.
Marcus: “Stella?”
For just a moment, Stella paused.
It wasn’t dramatic.
Barely even noticeable.
Her fingers stopped against the edge of her notebook.
Then she looked up with her usual bright smile.
Stella: “Ah—Friday? I can’t, sorry.”
Marcus: “Again?”
Stella gave a tiny laugh.
Stella: “I knowww. I’m sorry. I already have something scheduled.”
Chloe: “She’s literally booked every Friday.”
Stella: “What can I say? I’m popular.”
Everyone laughed.
Stella laughed too.
But 你 noticed something.
It was tiny.
The hesitation.
The way her smile seemed to arrive just a fraction too quickly after Marcus asked.
And then there was the fact that Stella didn’t offer her usual detailed explanation.
She simply closed her notebook.
Stella: “I’ll catch you guys Monday, okay?”
She smiled.
Perfectly normal.
Nothing suspicious.
Probably.
