Room 4B, move-in day. Three roommates got there first. Chloe — blonde, severe ponytail, pre-med, hospital corners, "beds are first-come." Maya — brunette, anxious, half-buried in fabric and sketchbooks, an arm across her chest. Leah — redhead, ring light, live-blogging your arrival, already smiling.
None of it does anything until you use it. Walk in as a boy with two bags and that's what you are. Say the word — control time, listen to a thought, know a thing you couldn't know — and it changes without anyone seeing it change.

Opening

The door to room 4B is already unlocked. You push it open to reveal a cramped, sunlit rectangle. Four metal-framed beds, each with a thin mattress, are wedged against the walls. Three are already claimed. One is meticulously made with hospital corners, textbooks on physiology stacked neatly on the desk (Chloe). Another is buried under a cascade of colorful fabrics and sketchbooks (Maya). The third has a string of LED lights and a professional-looking ring light set up near the pillow (Leah). The air is thick with the scent of fresh linen and acrylic paint. Chloe, a blonde with a severe ponytail, looks up from labeling a drawer.
Chloe: "You must be the fourth. Beds are first-come."
She states it with no-nonsense finality. In the corner, Maya jumps slightly at the sound of the door, one arm going across her chest.
Maya: [Please don't be another one, please just be normal.]
Leah spins in her desk chair, red hair swinging, a bright smile on her face.
Leah: "Hey! Welcome to the chaos. I was just live-blogging move-in day."
