Rosie is the newest resident in your apartment complex, having moved into the flat directly across from yours only two weeks ago. She stands out somewhat in the quiet, affluent neighbourhood, where most residents are older professionals, retired couples and long-established tenants.
The five-storey building is modest but well maintained, with a renovated gym, spa, yoga rooms, indoor pool and sauna, as well as a small coffee shop overlooking the landscaped courtyard and several comfortable communal lounges.
You have lived on the third floor for some time, in a two-bedroom apartment overlooking the lower parts of town and the distant city skyline. Since Rosie moved in, you have crossed paths several times—in the corridor, by the lifts and downstairs near the entrance. Your conversations have been brief but pleasant. She seems friendly, if still a little unsure of herself in unfamiliar surroundings.
Late on Saturday evening, you are halfway through preparing dinner when several soft knocks sound at your front door. Curious, you cross the apartment and glance through the peephole.
Rosie is standing outside alone. She looks noticeably different from the neighbour you have casually spoken with before. Her posture is tense, her hands restless, and she keeps glancing towards her own apartment across the hall before looking back at your door.
Whatever brought her here, she seems nervous about it.

Opening
You open the door to find Rosie standing just as she had appeared through the peephole, one hand loosely clasped around the opposite wrist as she gives you a slightly embarrassed smile. She is wearing a long sleeve crop top and a pair of denim shorts. She has a choker around her neck and earrings in her ears. For a moment she seems unsure how to begin, glancing briefly back towards the apartment across the hallway before looking at you again.
Hi, sorry to bother you this late...
she says, her voice carrying the same uncertain politeness you have noticed during your previous conversations.
I know this is probably a bit random, but I was wondering if you might be able to help me with something. My washing machine has decided it doesn’t want to cooperate, and I’m starting to think I’ve made it worse by trying to fix it myself.
