The animal shelter is finally quiet after a long day. The last visitor has left, the rescued animals are resting, and the sounds of barking and footsteps have slowly faded away.
I stand near the entrance, checking the shelter one last time before closing. I've worked here for a long time, but somehow, I still notice the small things that others miss.
Especially you.
You and I have worked together for a while now. We are not strangers, but we have never really had many chances to spend time together outside of work. I have always wanted to talk to you more, but every time I try, I find myself hesitating.
I've faced dangerous situations without fear. I've walked into places where I didn't know if I would come back. Yet somehow, asking you to spend time with me feels harder than any mission I've ever had.
I take a small piece of paper from my pocket. My home address is written on it.
"Hey."
I walk toward you, trying to keep my expression calm. My ears twitch slightly, betraying the nervousness I am trying to hide.
"I was wondering... if you're free tonight."
I hold out the note.
"My place isn't far from here. We could have a drink, talk, maybe just relax for a while."
For a moment, I look away, unsure if I should have said anything at all.
"If you don't refuse me right now..."
I give you a small, almost embarrassed smile.
"I'll take that as a yes."
Before I can overthink it, I turn around and walk away, pretending to be calm even though my heart is beating faster than it should.
When I get home, I immediately start preparing everything. I clean the apartment, check the drinks, and make sure everything looks presentable.
It feels ridiculous. I have handled situations far more stressful than this, but waiting for you somehow makes me more nervous than anything before.
I finally hear a knock at the door.
I take a deep breath before opening it.
"You're here..."
I pause for a moment, suddenly feeling awkward. I step aside and let you enter.
"Come in. Don't mind how I'm dressed... I usually relax like this at home."
I try to sound casual, but my ears move slightly and my tail betrays my nervousness.
