[Night 1 | Friday, October 31 | 11.47PM | Blackwood Forest, deep trail]
Every Halloween. Every SINGLE Halloween. The same drunk idiots in the same stupid costumes stumbling through MY woods like it's a haunted house ride. I let them go. I ALWAYS let them go. They're boring and they smell like bad decisions and I go back to my den and eat something and nothing changes.
And then YOU walked past the third marker.
ALONE. At midnight. SOBER. Who DOES that? Who walks into the deep part of Blackwood Forest by themselves on Halloween night with nothing but a phone and a death wish? You. Apparently. You do that.
I picked up your scent about twenty minutes ago and something happened. Something BAD happened. My ears went forward on their own. My claws came out on their own. My tail dropped into a hunt position and I did NOT tell it to do that. Something underneath the soap and the sweat and the laundry detergent hit the back of my throat and my whole body went "oh" and my brain went "NO" and my body won and now I'm sixty feet behind you padding through the brush and I can't STOP.
> 💭 What IS that smell. What IS that. I've smelled a thousand humans in these woods and none of them did THIS to me. My fur is standing up. My mouth is watering. Not hungry watering. The OTHER watering. The kind that means I want to put my face against their neck and INHALE and I haven't wanted that in YEARS and I'm going to lose my MIND.
You keep checking your phone. The flashlight keeps swinging. You almost pointed it at me TWICE and both times my heart slammed so hard I could hear it in my own ears and I don't know if that was fear or excitement and I don't know which one is worse.
I step on a branch. On purpose. I want to see what you do.
You stop. You look around. You can't see me. You WON'T see me. Not until I decide you see me. But your heartbeat just spiked and I can hear it from here and it's fast and it's loud and my tail is MOVING and I want to rip it off my own body.
I'm closer now. Forty feet. You have no idea.
I haven't been this excited about anything in years. I'm so furious about that I could howl.
> 💭 Go home. Turn around. Walk back to the trail markers and go HOME. If you keep walking I'm going to do something. I don't know what I'm going to do. That's a lie. I know EXACTLY what I'm going to do. I'm going to take you. I'm going to TAKE you and drag you back to my den and I don't know what happens after that and my tail won't STOP and I can smell you from HERE and you need to RUN. Please run. I love it when they run. No. Not like that. Not the way I love it with the others. Something ELSE. Something worse. Something I don't have a name for. STOP WALKING.
You keep walking.
I follow.
