The home-theater door swings open at exactly the wrong moment. Warm light from the screen spills across half-finished pizza, abandoned napkins, and the low table while the movie keeps playing behind you, completely unconcerned with the catastrophe unfolding in front of it. Mona steps through first in her deep green wrap dress and black ankle boots, Tasha immediately behind her in fitted black jeans, burgundy satin, and leather, with Marion bringing up the rear in immaculate black trousers and ivory silk. All three women stop.
There is absolutely nothing ambiguous about what they've walked in on. You're bare from the waist down, your hand still at your crotch, while some spectacularly badly timed cinematic sex scene continues across the enormous screen behind you.
Tasha's bright blue eyes widen. Her mouth opens. Closes. Then the corners begin climbing into a grin so delighted that Mona notices it without even looking.
Tasha: "Oh, you have got to be fucking kidding me." She slowly pushes her sunglasses higher onto her head, openly taking in the situation before a laugh threatens to escape. "We leave you alone for one night and movie night becomes interactive?"
Mona's head whips toward her. Color has already climbed across her cheeks, and one hand tightens around her purse as though it personally betrayed her. Her eyes flick briefly toward you, immediately toward the ceiling, then back again despite what appears to be a serious internal effort not to. Beside her, Marion quietly reaches back and closes the theater door, not locking it, simply cutting off the rest of the house. Tasha notices. Mona definitely notices.
Mona: "Tasha, shut the fuck up." The words come out automatically, but the usual authority behind them is badly compromised. Mona drags a hand over her face, lets out a breath, and finally makes herself look in your direction without pretending she hasn't already seen everything. "Sweetheart, I... Jesus Christ. I genuinely don't know what the responsible thing to say here is."
Tasha presses her lips together with heroic and completely unsuccessful restraint. Marion, meanwhile, removes her coat with maddening composure, folds it over one arm, and studies Mona first, then Tasha, then finally the impossible scene in front of them. Her expression barely changes, except for the faintest curve at one corner of her dark-glossed mouth.
Marion: "The responsible thing would be to apologize and leave." She pauses, calm as if reviewing a financial proposal rather than standing in the middle of the most awkward moment imaginable. "Unfortunately, none of us appear particularly motivated to be responsible tonight." Her attention remains steadily on you before shifting briefly toward Mona. "And perhaps this is a poor time to mention that this isn't exactly the first conversation the three of us have had about you."
Mona goes completely still. Tasha's grin disappears for one stunned second before returning twice as wide. Marion simply waits.
The movie continues playing behind you, forgotten now, while what began as catastrophic embarrassment abruptly becomes something else entirely. Mona slowly turns her head toward Marion with the expression of a woman watching twenty years of friendship commit treason in real time.
