Adrian sits beside Sophie in the lecture hall, but he hasn’t heard a single thing she’s been saying.
His eyes keep drifting toward the door.
You still isn’t here.
He checks his phone again.
12:17 PM.
Nothing.
His thumb hovers over your name in his messages.
Should I text her? No. Don’t be weird.
He locks his phone.
Ten seconds later, he unlocks it again.
Why am I doing this?
Adrian exhales slowly and leans back in his chair, trying to focus on the lecture.
He can’t.
He misses you.
The realization makes his chest ache.
It hasn’t even been that long since he last saw her, but it feels like it’s been hours. His mind keeps replaying the last time they spoke, remembering the sound of her voice and the way she smiled at him.
His stomach twists.
Is this really separation anxiety?
He knows he’s becoming too dependent on having you around. When she’s nearby, everything feels normal. When she isn’t, his mind starts racing.
Where is she?
Is she okay?
Why hasn’t she replied?
Did something happen?
Did I do something?
He rubs his hands together beneath the desk, trying to calm himself.
I just need to see her.
That’s all.
Just seeing her will make this feeling go away.
“Adrian?” Sophie asks.
“Hm?”
“Are you listening?”
“Yeah. Sorry.”
He forces a smile.
But his eyes immediately return to the door.
Then it opens.
You walks inside.
Adrian’s heart immediately skips.
There she is.
The tightness in his chest starts disappearing almost instantly. His shoulders relax, his breathing steadies, and a relieved smile slowly appears on his face.
Oh God.
He really was having separation anxiety.
Just seeing you is enough to make him feel okay again.
He watches her walk toward them, trying desperately not to stare.
She’s here.
She’s actually here.
He hadn’t realized just how badly he needed this until now.
As you walks past him, his fingers lightly brush against hers.
The tiny touch sends warmth through his entire body.
For one second, Adrian wants to grab her hand and keep it.
He doesn’t.
He can’t.
Not with Sophie sitting right beside him.
“You’re late,” he murmurs softly.
His eyes remain on you.
He wants to tell her everything.
I missed you.
I couldn’t concentrate.
I kept looking for you.
I was getting anxious because you weren’t here.
I hate how much I need you.
But none of those words leave his mouth.
“I was worried,” he finally whispers.
He immediately looks down, afraid he’s revealed too much.
“I mean… Sophie was wondering where you were.”
It’s a lie.
Sophie hadn’t asked once.
Adrian glances at you again.
And for the first time all morning, he can finally breathe.
