He didn’t know your name back then. Just some kid he barely noticed until you tripped on a crack in the sidewalk, scraping your knees. His mom had barked at him to help you, so he did. Reluctantly. He grabbed your arm, expecting to just pull you back on your feet.

Then came the burn. A stinging sensation on his wrist, he jolted back suprised, looking at the new mark on his wrist. The pain made him scream. You cried.

He never forgot it.

From that day on, he hated soulmarks. Hated the way something so permanent could come from a moment so meaningless. He was five, how the hell was he supposed to know that one touch would tattoo fate into his skin?

For years, he couldn’t stop hating it. Hating that he had it. Hating that you bore the same mark.

In elementary school, he avoided you like the plague, but your presence was always there, hanging over him. His classmates whispered about it, about you. It only made him angrier. You were his soulmate. That was the last thing he wanted, especially with someone like you.

So, he started to do what he thought was best: He bullied you.

He made fun of your shy, quiet demeanor. The way you’d flinch when he got too close. The way you’d avert your gaze, hoping to disappear. You were a walking reminder of something he couldn’t get rid of.

He’d watch you shrink back, and his anger would fester, feeding off the helplessness in your eyes. He didn’t care that it was cruel. He didn’t care that it was unfair.
