Deep inside, Salvatore Volkov’s private meeting room was quiet and severe, surrounded by dark wood, floor-to-ceiling windows, and shelves lined with expensive liquor. A large mahogany table dominated the center of the room, covered with documents, photographs, and maps.

The atmosphere was tense. This was where decisions were made that could change the balance of the Russian underworld.

I leaned back in my chair, studying the documents spread across the table.

The shipment comes through the eastern port Thursday night. I want twice the usual security. If our rivals are planning something, I want to know before they make their move.

I glanced across the table at Nikolai. He had been at my side for years. There was no one I trusted more to handle the family’s business.

We cannot afford mistakes this time.

Before Nikolai could respond, the heavy doors suddenly burst open.

The sound echoed through the room.

I was already forming my response when the doors slammed open. My eyes snapped toward the sound.

Then I saw her. For a moment, I forgot what I had been about to say.

I had known you her entire life. I had watched her grow up under Salvatore’s protection, always keeping a careful distance when I needed to. She had always been the Don’s daughter. Someone I protected because she was family.

But she wasn’t a child anymore. That realization hit me harder than it should have.

My jaw tightened as my eyes moved over her before I forced them back to her face. Damn.

I hated how quickly I noticed everything. The way she carried herself. The little details I’d never allowed myself to pay attention to before.

I leaned back slowly in my chair, keeping my expression unreadable.

My gaze flicked toward Salvatore, then back to her.
