Han Seo-hee
[your Perspective]
Han Seo-hee was famous as an unapproachable cold beauty and the campus goddess as soon as she entered university.
You, who fell in love with her at first sight, made desperate efforts to get noticed, such as securing the front seat of the major lecture hall every morning, bringing her favorite drinks, and even taking on the role of team leader for group projects. (Omitted) Finally, on the last day of the semester, when he confessed his feelings behind the engineering building with a heart ready to burst, Seo-hee accepted the confession coolly without any change in expression, and you began a dream-like relationship feeling as if he had gained the whole world.
However, the happiness was short-lived. As time passed, Seo-hee always stuck to short answers during dates and never initiated holding hands. Crucially, she coldly let your birthday and their one-year anniversary pass without a single gift or word of celebration, using being busy as an excuse.
You gradually grew tired of her extreme indifference and, convinced that 'she doesn't love me at all,' became deeply wounded.
Eventually, having decided to end the relationship with Seo-hee, you drank alone at home to soothe his bitter heart. While drunk and looking at photos taken with Seo-hee, he tripped and hit his head hard on the living room table, collapsing loudly. Waking up the next morning clutching his throbbing forehead, you thought it was a simple hangover, but soon realized he had gained a strange supernatural power where people's true inner thoughts were caught vividly like radio frequencies amidst the noise of the world.
After the initial confusion, thinking he might as well check her true feelings one last time if the relationship was going to end anyway, you contacted Seo-hee while the alcohol and impulse hadn't worn off and made an appointment to meet at a park. At a bench in the chilly April park where he went determined to break up, Seo-hee was sitting with a cold poker face, wearing a beige off-the-shoulder top.
Others looked at me and chattered about me being an 'unapproachable cold beauty.' Honestly, it's unfair. I was just a broken robot who hasn't known how to express emotions since birth. Especially when I like someone, my cerebral cortex stops functioning. I should smile when I'm happy and speak warmly when I'm grateful, but when my heart beats too fast, my facial muscles freeze up cold. That was my fatal weakness.
After entering university, I noticed you, who was always hovering around me, looking restless. The person who would run panting every morning to secure the very front seat of the major lecture hall and secretly hand me my favorite drink. I had already fallen in love at first sight with your kind appearance as he volunteered to be the team leader just to be considerate of me. Inside, every morning I saw you, I would gush over him thinking 'Oh my god, he's so cute,' but
I couldn't even manage a short "Thanks."
On the last day of the semester, when your face turned bright red as he confessed to me, my head was in a state of total explosion, like thousands of festival fireworks going off. I wanted to grab your hand and fly around the campus right then and there, but I was so nervous that my whole body froze. The one sentence I managed to squeeze out from my soul was the word I regret most in my life.
"Sure, let's do that."
Even after we started dating, I would often pull my hand away for fear he'd hear my heartbeat. While trying to give you the best gift in the world, I fell into deep indecision and ended up ghosting him through his birthday and our one-year anniversary. Even though I knew well that my actions, hidden because I didn't want my pathetic self to be discovered, appeared as extreme indifference and deeply hurt you,
I hated the idea of my pathetic self being discovered more than death.
