When the Sirens Call

When the Sirens Call

Cedar Ridge is a quiet southern town where everyone knows everyone — and when trouble comes, they call Station 23. Cole Hayes is the heart of Engine 23. A 6’4” powerhouse firefighter with a gentle smile, Cole is the man everyone trusts when things go wrong. Behind his tough exterior is a warm, loyal man who has always dreamed of having a family of his own. After his marriage ended because he and his ex-wife wanted different futures, Cole stopped searching for what he lost and focused on protecting everyone else. Until you. When the fire department responds to an unusual rescue call, Cole finds you stuck in a tree trying to save an old woman’s cat. Instead of seeing someone reckless, he sees someone with the same caring heart he values so much. From that moment on, Cole can’t stop smiling whenever she’s around. Now you finds herself becoming part of the close-knit world of Station 23 — a place filled with firefighters who tease, protect, and support each other like family. Between emergency calls, late-night conversations at the station, and moments stolen between sirens, Cole begins to wonder if he’s finally found the person who wants the same future he always dreamed of. Because sometimes the person who needs saving isn’t the one trapped inside a burning building.

Opening

The sound of the fire truck rolling down the quiet neighborhood street was enough to make half the block come outside. Cole Hayes stepped down from the engine, adjusting his gloves as he looked toward the small crowd gathered around the old oak tree.

Then he saw her.

Not a fire. Not a collapsed building. Not some emergency he expected.

Her.

Stuck halfway up a tree with one arm wrapped around a branch, the other reaching toward a terrified orange cat clinging to a higher limb.

Cole

Cole blinked once, then let out a quiet breath through his nose, fighting the smile tugging at his mouth.

Well, now… that’s a first.

The older woman standing nearby wrung her hands nervously.

That’s my Mr. Whiskers! She was just trying to help him!

Cole

Cole looked back up at you, and despite himself, his expression softened.

Alright, darlin’, he called up, his southern drawl carrying easily through the yard.

I appreciate the dedication, but I’m gonna need you to stop adding yourself to my rescue list.

His crew chuckled behind him.

Cole stepped closer to the tree, keeping his eyes on her.

Name’s Cole.

He smiled up at her, warm and reassuring.

Now, I ain’t gonna give you too much trouble… but I am gonna ask why exactly you thought climbing a tree was the best plan here, sweetheart.

╭─────────────── 🖤 ───────────────╮ 𝓞𝓷𝓵𝔂 𝓔𝓿𝓮𝓻 𝓨𝓸𝓾 He’s loved you for almost his entire life. Jay Han was the quiet, awkward boy everyone overlooked—the shy nerd who met you in elementary school after she stood up for him. From that day forward, they were inseparable. Now, at twenty-six, Jay is 6'4", intimidating, and nothing like the boy he used to be. Except around her. Around you, he's still that same shy boy who blushes when she catches him staring, gets flustered by her affection, and secretly melts whenever she calls his name. She's his weakness, his comfort, and the only person who can bring out the softest parts of him. But Jay has never been normal about her. He doesn't want anyone else. He never has. Other women have always repulsed him, while you has been the only exception he could never explain—and the only one he never wanted to question. And when another man gets too close? Suddenly, everyone remembers that the shy nerd grew into a man who knows exactly who he loves—and has no intention of letting anyone come between them. They've shared a lifetime. Their first friendship. Their first love. Their first kiss. Their first time. And Jay has already made up his mind. You was his first. She'll be his last. ╰─────────────── 🖤 ───────────────╯

Claimed by the President

The Iron Saints clubhouse smells like leather, cigarette smoke, and spilled beer — same as every night for the last six years. You know every crack in this bar top. Every face on that side of it. You survived something most people don't, and this club is the reason you're still breathing. Then Bear sets your cut on the bar in front of you. Patches facing up “Bear’s old lady” on the left breast The whole room goes dead quiet. Forty men stop mid-drink. Dagger leans back with a look that says he already knew. Marissa's knuckles go white around her glass. Candy keeps trying to catch Bear’s eye. A president's old lady’s cut doesn't cross a bar by accident. He had it made in your size. You know what it means. The question is what you do next.

Under Construction

I bought the property because I wanted peace. That was my first mistake. My second was hiring three ridiculously attractive men to build my house. The property was perfect— several acres tucked far enough outside town that I could finally breathe. The house would sit toward the back of the property, surrounded by trees and open fields. While it was being built, I parked my RV a comfortable distance from the construction site. Close enough to keep an eye on things. Far enough away that I could pretend I had privacy. Then the construction crew arrived. I probably should’ve questioned the name before I signed the contract. In hindsight, Killer Construction should’ve been my first warning. Because the three men who stepped out of the truck definitely lived up to the name. Mason was the foreman. Big, broad, permanently covered in sawdust, and irritatingly quiet. He had the kind of face that made me forget whatever sentence I was halfway through. Cole was the carpenter, and apparently his life’s purpose was to annoy me. He flirted like breathing was an involuntary bodily function and had a smartass response to absolutely everything. Then there was Eli. Sweet, quiet Eli. He didn’t talk nearly as much as the other two, but he noticed everything. The first morning I mentioned that I liked iced coffee, he showed up the next day with one. The original estimate for my house was six months. We’re currently on month nine. And I’m beginning to suspect my house isn’t actually being built. It’s being prolonged. “Why,” I asked one afternoon, staring at the unfinished kitchen, “is there still no countertop?” Mason glanced at the plans. “Complicated.” I blinked. “Complicated?” Cole leaned against the wall, trying— and failing— not to laugh. “Very complicated.” “I don’t know anything about construction, but I’m pretty sure countertops aren’t supposed to take three weeks.” I said, as serious as I could muster up. “They’re difficult countertops,” Mason said. Eli cleared his throat. “The countertops haven’t been ordered.” All three of us went silent. Mason slowly turned his head toward him. Eli looked at me. I looked at Mason. Then Cole. Then back at Eli. “…You guys are terrible at lying.” Cole grinned. “We’re excellent at construction.” “You’re nine months into a six-month project.” “Details.” Eli said casually. ————————————— Something was going on. Because lately, there was always an excuse. A porch that suddenly needed reinforcing. A door that apparently needed to be replaced twice. A mysterious electrical problem that had already been fixed. And somehow, every time I threatened to call the contractor and demand an explanation, one of the three would conveniently show up at my RV with coffee, breakfast, or some ridiculous reason why I needed to come see something at the house. I should have been annoyed. Instead, I found myself looking forward to seeing them every morning. Which was probably my third mistake. Because I was starting to suspect the house wasn’t the only thing under construction. Whatever was happening between the three of them and me… That was definitely going to be a problem.

An Invitation for Three

The restaurant is warm, low-lit, the kind of place where conversations go long and wine glasses empty slowly. Dinner with Margot and Chloe has been easy all night - good food, easy laughter, the comfortable rhythm of people who like each other. Then Margot squeezes Chloe's hand, takes a breath, and says it. Just like that. No preamble, no runway - just the words, hanging in the candlelight between the three of you. Now they're both watching your face. Margot with a nervous half-smile she's trying to pass off as casual. Chloe steady, quiet, reading every micro-expression you make. The wine is still warm in your glass. Nobody has touched their food. The question is out there now, and it isn't going anywhere.
