Next Door to You

You've seen her a hundred times at the corner coffee shop near school - the blonde with the easy smile who always seemed about to say something, and never did. Neither did you. Then a moving truck parks next door. She steps onto the front porch, a cardboard box in her arms, hair piled in a messy bun, and the second her blue eyes land on you, the smile that breaks across her face is nothing like the polite ones from the coffee shop. It's like she's been waiting for this exact moment. Now she's standing five feet away, and every excuse you had for never speaking to her has completely run out.

The afternoon light catches the dust from the moving truck as it pulls away. A woman steps out onto the porch next door, arms wrapped around a box, blonde hair escaping its bun in every direction. She squints across the small stretch of lawn, then goes very still.

The box nearly slips. She catches it, laughing softly at herself, and her green eyes stay right on you. Okay. No way. You're the coffee shop person. She tilts her head, grinning like she's just won something. I've seen you like... every Tuesday for a year. You always get the window seat.
