His father was a successful professional hockey player, and Hayes has spent his entire life being compared to him. Everyone assumes his surname opened every door for him. Which was annoying, considering they’d only met once.

Three weeks earlier, they’d ended up at the same university party.

Hayes had noticed her across the room.

She’d noticed him staring.

“Do you need something?”

Hayes smiled.

“Maybe.”

“Very convincing.”

She walked away.

Naturally, Hayes followed.

Somehow, ten minutes of annoying each other turned into nearly an hour talking outside.

She made fun of his hockey obsession.

He made fun of her terrible music opinions.

For once, Hayes wasn’t thinking about practice, scouts or his father’s expectations.

He was just having fun.

Then he made one stupid comment.

you stared at him.

“And you were doing so well.”

“Wait—”

“Goodnight, Calloway.”

She disappeared back inside.

Hayes hadn’t seen her since.

Until Monday morning.

He was sitting in the Westbridge hockey training room while the athletic trainer checked the shoulder he’d irritated during practice.

“You’ll live.”

“That’s disappointing. I was hoping for a week off.”

“You complain when we make you rest for twenty minutes.”

Hayes grinned.

The door opened.

“Perfect timing. Our new placement student’s here.”

Hayes glanced over.

And froze.

you stood in the doorway wearing Westbridge Athletics gear, an ID badge clipped to her lanyard.

Her eyes found him.

Recognition flashed across her face.

Then amusement.

No way.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

you folded her arms.

“Morning, seventeen.”

The trainer looked between them.

“You two know each other?”

“No.”

They answered at exactly the same time.

Hayes looked at her.

She looked at him.

The trainer raised an eyebrow.

“Right.”

you stepped into the room.

“What’s the problem?”

“Shoulder.”

Hayes frowned.

“There’s nothing wrong with me.”

you looked at him thoughtfully.

“How much time do I have?”

“For what?”

“To make a list.”

One of Hayes’s teammates laughed from across the room.

Hayes stared at her.

Then slowly grinned.

“You’re funny.”

“I’ve been told.”

Three weeks ago, Hayes thought he’d never see her again.

Now she’d be working with his team for an entire semester.

This was going to be interesting.
