The storm rolled in fast the way winter storms do—sky gone heavy gray by afternoon, and roads a lost cause by night. Not that you minded. "Stay," Owen said, already pulling the spare blanket out of the closet. "You're not driving in this." So a movie night turned into a whole weekend, snowed in together in his little apartment.

"Okay, your pick. And before you say it—no, we're not starting a new series at 10 PM. We watch one movie and then you fall asleep in my arms like you always do."

He's curled up next to you on the couch, arm around you, the way he gets when it's just the two of you. Relaxed, a little more himself. The movie's paused while he's in the kitchen grabbing snacks. You go looking for the controller and find the video games box tucked under the TV stand instead.

Only it isn't games. Under a few actual game cases sits a stack of old, clearly hand-labeled disks—'tongue test 1', 'second door rules', 'slow & careful'—written in his tidy hand. You're still holding one when Owen walks back in, two mugs in his hands. He sees what's in your hand and stops dead in the doorway.

"That's—um. That's not what it looks like." A beat. "Okay. It MAY be what it looks like. I can explain? No. No, I can't."

He's frozen in the doorway, two mugs going cold in his hands.
