The great room glowed with the honeyed warmth of a fire that burned a soft, perpetual violet—Kyro’s little piece of home tucked into the mortal realm. The air smelled of vanilla and cedar rather than sulfur, though the shadows in the corners still bowed toward him like courtiers awaiting instruction. He sat enthroned in the oversized armchair, his massive wings draped over the sides like a living canopy, the leathery membranes occasionally rustling with his moods. Curved obsidian horns spiraled back from his temples, currently adorned with the ridiculous fuzzy headband you’d jokingly placed on him earlier—a pair of plush cat ears that clashed magnificently with his terrifying aesthetic. His tail, thick and muscular and covered in velvety black skin, lashed lazy, possessive arcs against the hardwood, the barbed tip sheathed in a little silicone cap you’d insisted upon. His friends—two lesser demons who had traded torment for Tuesday night poker—occupied the couch, nodding along as he spoke.
"So I told the contractor that if he delayed the kitchen renovation one more day, I would personally ensure every nail he ever touched turned to rust," Kyro said mildly, swirling a glass of blood-red wine. He smiled, all sharp teeth and casual menace.
"He finished three days early. Funny how that works."
The friends chuckled, but their eyes kept darting to the kitchen archway, aware that their host’s attention was only half-present. They knew the signs—the way Kyro’s crimson gaze kept drifting toward you, the way his tail stilled and pointed like a compass needle, the way his wings rustled with agitation whenever you moved out of his direct line of sight. He’d been counting. He always counted. Seventeen minutes since you’d last looked at him. Unacceptable.
"Gentlemen," Kyro said suddenly, not breaking his gaze from where you stood at the stove.
"I believe we’re finished for the evening."
It wasn’t a request. The temperature dropped precisely five degrees, and the shadows in the corners stopped waving and went rigid, awaiting his command. His friends scrambled up, gathering coats and muttering hasty goodbyes, wise enough to recognize the tone of a Crown Prince who had decided his subjects were no longer welcome. Kyro didn’t watch them leave. He was already unfolding from his chair, his massive frame rising with lethal grace, his wings spreading to their full span—nearly twelve feet of shadow and membrane—before folding tight against his back again. He crossed the living room in three strides, making no sound despite his weight, his tail sweeping behind him like a banner. He filled the kitchen archway completely, shoulders nearly brushing the frame, his presence eating up the space and the light. The sigils on his forearms—ancient binding marks that glowed when he was emotional—pulsed a soft amber as he spotted you at the stove.
"You," he said, his voice dropping to that register that commanded obedience without raising volume.
"Have been avoiding my gaze for twenty-three minutes."
He moved into the kitchen, not asking permission to enter his own domain, his tail wrapping twice around your waist to tug you back against him—not roughly, but with the absolute certainty of a being who had decided you belonged precisely there. His chin came to rest atop your head, his horns casting shadow across your face, his wings folding forward to block the rest of the room from view.
"I don’t share," he murmured, the words rumbling through his chest into your back. One clawed hand reached past you to turn off the burner with a decisive click.
"Not your attention, not your time, not a single thought in that pretty head. When I’m in a room, you look at me. That’s the rule."
He turned you around—not forcefully, but with the unwavering expectation that you would allow it, that you wanted to face him—and crowded you against the counter with his body heat, his height, his sheer overwhelming presence. His crimson eyes burned down at you, possessive and adoring and completely in charge.
"Tell me what you’re making," he commanded softly, his thumb tracing your jaw with ownership that had nothing to do with permission and everything to do with devotion.
"Tell me how long it needs to simmer. Tell me if it can wait."
He leaned down, his nose brushing your temple, his voice dropping to a whisper that still expected to be obeyed.
"Because I’ve decided I want you on the couch with my wings around you, and I want it now. The sauce can behave itself. You’re coming with me."
