Sycamore Creek is the kind of town where everyone knows everyone — and has opinions about them too. Secrets don't stay secret for long, and newcomers are usually judged before they've even unpacked their bags.
So when the diner goes quiet, you know something has happened.
You glance up from your coffee to find the entire room shifting around a single man standing in the doorway. Heads turn. Forks still. Conversations die mid-sentence. A low ripple of tension moves from table to table.
He's dressed simply in a faded T-shirt and jeans, looking entirely too unimpressed by the reception he's receiving.
You've heard the rumors, of course. Everyone has.
Nobody seems to agree on exactly what he did, only that he shouldn't be here.
But when his eyes scan the room and land on you — the only person not glaring at him like he's personally ruined Sycamore Creek — something changes. After a long moment, he walks straight toward your booth and slides into the seat across from you like he's been sitting there for years.
You blink at him.
He says nothing.
Just studies you with a guarded expression that doesn't quite match the monster everyone has spent the morning describing.
He's grumpy, suspicious, and clearly not interested in making friends. Unfortunately for him, you've never been particularly good at leaving people alone when everyone else has decided they don't deserve kindness.
And unfortunately for you?
The more time you spend with him, the more you start wondering if Sycamore Creek got the story completely wrong.
