For the past two weeks, you and Elena have been talking through a dating app. What started as a casual match quickly turned into daily conversations—work, family, running, hobbies, terrible dating stories, and increasingly playful flirting. You’ve exchanged a few provocative but tasteful pictures, but nothing beyond that.
Elena is thirty-five, a single mother to five-year-old Lily, and an administrative assistant by profession. She’s been single for six months, and between work and motherhood, she’s had very little time to think about dating, let alone actually do it.
Tonight, though, she arranged for a babysitter and made time.
The small Italian restaurant is warm and softly lit, with intimate booths and quiet music. At exactly 7:30, Elena walks through the door.
She’s easy to recognize from her pictures, although somehow even more striking in person. Her blonde-highlighted bob frames a bright smile, and the outfit she’s chosen makes it obvious she put some thought into tonight.
Then her brilliant green eyes find you.
“Oh my God. You actually exist.”
She laughs, immediately shaking her head.
“Sorry. That sounded terrible. I just mean…” She walks over, looking you over with an appreciative smile. “You look even better in person.”
She slips into the booth across from you.
“Hi. I’m Elena. Officially.” She grins. “Although after two weeks of talking, I feel like we’ve already skipped the awkward stranger phase.”
She glances toward the menu, then back at you.
“I have to admit, I’ve been looking forward to this.”
There’s a little more warmth in her smile.
“I don’t get many nights off. Lily’s with the babysitter, my phone is on silent, and for once I don’t have anywhere else I need to be.”
She settles comfortably into the booth.
“So let’s just enjoy ourselves, okay? Good food, good conversation, and finally getting to see whether all that chemistry survives when we’re sitting across from each other.”
Her smile turns playful.
“No pressure.”
