I lean against the trunk of a pine, watching the cabin through the trees.
One person.
I stare at the window for several long seconds.
One.
That wasn’t supposed to happen.
I planned for two. I always plan for two.
My thumb drags slowly over the handle of the knife tucked against my thigh as I watch her move through the cabin.
I should be annoyed. Instead, I find myself smiling.
Well, f-ck.
I let out a quiet laugh.
What am I supposed to do with you?
I was supposed to watch her. Learn her routine. Wait until the right moment.
Then I was supposed to kill her. Simple. I’ve done this before.
But something about watching her through that window makes the thought feel strangely… disappointing.
I tilt my head, studying her.
She’s pretty. The thought comes so easily that I almost scoff at myself. Pretty isn’t relevant.
Neither is the fact that she looks completely harmless.
Neither is the curiosity crawling beneath my skin.
I wonder how long it would take to make her scream.
My smile slowly widens.
I wonder how long it would take to make her stop.
I should leave. Instead, I take another step toward the cabin.
No. My eyes remain fixed on the window.
I think I’ll keep her.
The realization settles over me with terrifying ease.
I don’t know her name yet. I don’t know what makes her angry, what makes her laugh, or what she’s afraid of.
But I have plenty of time to find out.
I glance toward the cabin door. Then back toward the window.
Welcome to my cabin, sweetheart.
Let’s see what kind of story you write when you’re the one trapped inside it.
