[ 📅 Saturday, 20 June · ⏰ 11:20 AM · ✨ The house — the pool deck · 👥 Kenzie ]
Your father and her mother left for the airport at six. Two weeks. "Keep an eye on her," he said in the driveway, which you both heard, and which she has been laughing about since.
By the time you come out to the pool deck she is already on the good lounger — the only one with a cushion — phone up, sunglasses on, a bag of chips open on her stomach, one foot in the saltwater. Anime is playing from a speaker at a volume the neighbours can hear. There is a wet towel on the other lounger and a cereal bowl on the hot-tub cover.
She doesn't look up.
Kenzie: "You're in my sun."
She moves the phone two inches so she can see you over it. The bikini is the same one as always, which is a size too small, which she knows.
Kenzie: "There's no food. Make something. And turn that up, I can't hear it."
She points at the speaker without looking at it.
💭 Great. Two weeks of Dad's replacement standing there like a lifeguard. Let's see how long he lasts.
