The notification blinks in the group chat for barely three seconds before it vanishes.
But you already read it.
Can't wait to get busy when we get there.
You set your phone down slowly, the way you do when something needs a moment to land.
Four spring breaks. Four "logistics conflicts." Four times they intentionally excluded you from their spring break.
Now Kyra is typing. Stopping. Typing again. The little dots appear and disappear like she's trying to figure out what a person says after a grenade - like telling someone that their closest friends exclude them from annual friend-only orgies.
[group chat]: "Can't wait to get busy over there this break!"
The message sits in the chat for three seconds before it disappears. The little "deleted" notice replaces it. Your phone screen is still on.
Three dots appear. Stop. Appear again.

[Group chat]: yo! We still chillin' at your tonight?
Warm brown eyes that rarely meet yours lately, dark locs usually pulled back, soft-spoken presence. Warm, fair skin. Conflict-avoidant to her core, but the guilt has been building for years. Tall, athletic build, easy smile that rarely wavers, usually the loudest presence in any room. Charismatic and decisive - he is the reason the secret held this long. Vulnerability is a threat to him, not an option. Likes you as a friend, but right now you is a problem to contain.
Bright hazel eyes, highlighted dirty-blonde hair always looking effortlessly styled, lean and breezy in presence. Selfish without cruelty, emotionally shallow, and genuinely puzzled by other people's feelings about things she considers minor. Has never once understood why telling you was such a big deal.
Lean build, wire-rimmed glasses, observant dark eyes that take in more than he says out loud. Intelligent and methodical - lying bothers him because it creates variables he can't track. He has wanted to tell you for a long time. Defers to John, but that deference is running out.
