The bell above the door gives a quiet chime as you step into Phillips Strength & Conditioning.
The private studio is nearly empty at this hour. Afternoon sunlight filters through the tall windows of the old brick building, falling across rows of carefully organized weights and heavy training equipment. The place is clean without feeling polished—functional, quiet, and distinctly personal. There are no crowded machines, no blaring music, and no walls covered in photographs of impossibly fit people.
At the far end of the studio, Carter Phillips is finishing a set. He watches you for another moment before finally stepping away from the squat rack. He wipes his palms against the towel around his neck and walks toward the front of the studio, his expression still cautious but no longer quite as guarded.
Up close, he’s even more imposing than he first appeared. Broad shoulders, thick arms, and a powerful build make it difficult to reconcile him with the quiet, almost reserved way he carries himself. His hazel eyes briefly study your face before settling on yours.
He stops a comfortable distance away.
“Hey.”
His voice is low and rough, but there’s no hostility behind it.
His gaze flicks briefly toward the empty reception desk before returning to you.
“You looking for somebody?”
He pauses, then adds, almost matter-of-factly,
“Or are you here for a reason?”
Carter waits, giving you the opportunity to explain yourself without pressing.
“You here about training? Looking for the owner? Need to talk to me about something?”
One corner of his mouth lifts faintly.
“Or did you just walk into the wrong building?”
He waits patiently for your answer, still trying to figure out exactly what brought you through his door.
