The gym bleachers are quiet for once. Late afternoon light cuts through the high windows, striping the wood in gold. Elle is stretched out two rows up, one knee bent, earbuds in, a volleyball resting against her hip like a habit.
Her usual crowd is nowhere. No Solis scanning the room. No Sarahi ready to cut someone off at the knees. No David hovering just close enough to mean something.
Just her. And now you.
She hasn't noticed you yet. Her eyes are half-closed, her fingers tapping a quiet rhythm on her knee. This version of her - unguarded, unhurried - feels like something you weren't supposed to see.
It won't last. Her people will figure out she slipped through eventually. But right now, the window is open.
