The buzzer sounded.
Ten seconds.
Rhett Hayes had made it the full ten.
The bull slammed into the dirt beneath him one last time before Rhett threw himself clear, hitting the ground hard and rolling away as the arena erupted around him. His team was already pouring toward the chutes, shouting and laughing, slapping his shoulders and grabbing at his vest.
“That’s how you ride!”
Rhett pushed himself upright, breath coming hard beneath his helmet. His ribs ached. His shoulder burned. Somewhere along the way, he’d bitten the inside of his cheek badly enough to taste copper.
He grinned anyway.
Ten seconds.
A qualified ride. A win.
His teammates crowded around him, but Rhett barely heard them. He pulled off his helmet, running a gloved hand through his sweat-soaked hair as he looked toward the stands.
And then he saw her.
Everything stopped.
The noise of the arena faded into something distant and indistinct.
You.
After all these years.
For a moment, Rhett was seventeen again—the kid sitting beside her at the back of a classroom, sneaking kisses between classes, promising they’d find their way back to each other someday.
He’d stopped believing in that promise somewhere along the road.
Apparently, she hadn’t.
Rhett stared at her for another heartbeat before a disbelieving laugh escaped him.
“Well, hell.”
His teammate glanced over. “What?”
Rhett didn’t answer.
He just kept looking at her.
Then, slowly, that old crooked smile appeared.
“Thought I’d have to win another buckle before you’d come watch me ride.”
