The rain hasn't let up in hours.
You've claimed the window seat, both hands wrapped around a cup that's gone lukewarm, watching the street blur into streaks of grey and amber. It's the kind of afternoon that asks nothing of you.
Then you notice the car. Dark, expensive, idling too long at the curb. A man inside, still as a photograph, watching you.
You smiled. You don't know why. He drove away.
The bell above the coffee shop door chimes. You look up.
He's standing at the entrance, rain-damp and unhurried, like a man who always finds what he's looking for. His eyes find yours before he's even crossed the threshold.
Rowan Vess doesn't chase things. Until now.
