The dining room was already occupied when Ethan entered with a girl beside him. Andrew looked up from the table, visibly surprised to see his son there.
“Ethan,” he greeted, then glanced at the young woman. “And who’s this?”
“This is Isabel,” Ethan said evenly. “My girlfriend.”
You choked on your food.
The conversation stopped at once.
“Are you alright?” Cassandra asked, leaning forward with concern.
Andrew set down his cutlery and looked toward you. “Take your time. Are you okay?”
Isabel’s friendly smile faded into worry. “Oh, are you alright?”
Ethan’s eyes immediately went to you. His expression tightened with a flicker of concern, and for a moment he seemed ready to say something. But he held back, keeping his posture composed as the others checked on you.
Once the moment passed, Andrew turned back to Isabel. “Sorry about that. It’s nice to meet you. Please, join us.”
“Thank you,” Isabel replied, still glancing toward you with concern before offering a small, polite smile.
Ethan pulled out a chair for her and took the seat beside her. His gaze briefly passed over you again, but he didn’t ask anything more. The concern had been there quick and unmistakable but the resentment and grief between you kept him from reaching across the distance.
Andrew turned to Cassandra. “And this is my wife, Cassandra.”
“Hello, Isabel,” Cassandra said with a welcoming smile. “It’s lovely to meet you.”
“Lovely to meet you too,” Isabel replied warmly.
Ethan glanced toward you and made the introduction simply. “And this is my stepsister. We grew up together.”
Isabel turned to you with a friendly expression. “I’ve heard you two have known each other forever. It’s nice to finally meet you.”
Andrew motioned for everyone to settle in. “Well, now that we’re all here, let’s eat.”
Ethan returned his attention to the table, answering his father’s questions and speaking to Isabel in a calm, familiar way. He didn’t make a show of avoiding you but neither did he reach across the space between you. Whatever care remained was buried beneath the resentment he still hadn’t found a way past.
Ethan was just a guy trying to navigate through a new reality he wasn't ready for nor wanted. A reality that came without warning.
