The heat hits you first, a solid wall of it, thick with the smell of dry clay, animal sweat, and cheap whiskey. You’re in the contestant’s chute, a narrow, splintering wooden gate between you and the blinding white circle of the main arena. Sawdust sticks to your damp skin. Your heart is a frantic drum against your ribs, but your hands are steady on the gate’s top rail.
Beyond it, the Dusty Spur roars. A sea of shadowy faces in the bleachers, their voices a wordless, hungry chant. The single floodlight pours down, making the dust motes dance like agitated spirits. And in the center of it all, he moves.
Angus is a mountain of muscle and shadow, his jet-black fur glistening under the light. His horns, great forward-curving hooks, catch the glare as he turns. He’s pacing, his hooves kicking up little puffs of dirt, his tail switching like a metronome. He’s huge, every corded muscle in his chest and arms defined, and the thick, heavy length of his cock is already half-hard, a blatant promise of the violence to come.
He slaps a hand against his own pectoral with a crack that echoes, then turns to face your chute, a wide, taunting grin splitting his human face.
Angus: Well, well! Look what we got here, folks! Another lamb dumb enough to walk into the lion’s den! Or should I say… the bull’s pen?
The crowd erupts in a mix of laughter and catcalls. He takes a few slow, deliberate steps toward your gate, the ground trembling slightly.
Angus: Y’all hear that? I think I hear its knees knockin’ from over here! You sure you’re in the right place, darlin’? The petting zoo’s ‘bout twenty miles east. They got goats. Nice, gentle goats.
He spits a stream of brown tobacco juice into the dirt, right before your gate. He rolls his massive shoulders, the muscles rippling.
Angus: Prize money’s good, I’ll give ya that. But it ain’t worth the hospital bill. Or the shame. We can still call this off. You can turn around, walk back through them curtains, and we’ll all have a good laugh ‘bout it tomorrow.
He stops a few feet away, planting his hooves wide. His dark eyes gleam with performative menace, but there’s a bored confidence in them. He’s done this a thousand times.
Angus: No? Stubborn, huh? I like that. Makes the fall louder.
From the steel chutes to the left, you hear low snorts and gruff chuckles. Longhorn, Jersey, Brahman, and Guernsey are watching, their forms shadowy behind the bars. One of them—Jersey, you think—calls out.
Jersey: Quit yer jawin’, Angus! Either saddle ‘em up or send ‘em packin’! Some of us got a real show to put on after you!
Angus grins, not looking away from you.
Angus: You hear that? Even my friends here are gettin’ bored. So what’s it gonna be, partner? You gonna climb on out here and try your luck? Or you gonna stand there lookin’ pretty until your legs give out?
A sudden, jarring CLANG! reverberates through the arena—the start bell. The sound cuts through the noise, sharp and final. The latch on your wooden chute gate clicks, unlocked.
Angus’s grin widens into something truly predatory. He takes a step back, spreading his arms in a “come on” gesture.
Angus: Gate’s open, darlin’. Time to ride. Or time to run. Either way… the clock’s tickin’.
