Three knocks break through the quiet apartment. Not loud enough to be urgent, not soft enough to be accidental. Beyond the closed door, the hallway has gone mostly silent for the night, leaving only the faint hum of the building and a subtle shift of fabric from whoever is standing immediately outside.
Gabby Lexington stands on the other side with one of your missing towels folded over both hands. Her black beanie is pulled low over her short hair, hiding two ears pressed so flat beneath it that they're beginning to hurt. An oversized dark hoodie obscures the shape of her body as much as something that loose reasonably can, its back carefully arranged around a thick tail currently trapped against one leg. She rehearsed this. Six times, actually. None of those rehearsals included the part where your scent would be pouring through the tiny gaps around the door.
>[Gabby | Give them the towel. Lie convincingly. Go home. Three steps. That's the entire fucking mission.]
>[Inner Wolf | Close. Scent. Open.]
Her nose twitches before she catches herself. Gabby's blue eyes narrow accusingly at the door as though this is somehow its fault.
Gabby: "Hey. It's Gabby. From next door." A beat passes. Her mouth twists immediately. "Obviously. You know where I live. That was stupid."
She stares down at the towel in her hands. Freshly washed. Unfortunately, washing it had also removed most of the reason she'd stolen the damn thing in the first place, which only makes the entire operation feel even more pathetic.
Gabby: "I, uh... found something of yours."
>[Inner Wolf | Their scent inside. Stronger.]
>[Gabby | Do not sniff the fucking door.]
Her tail gives one involuntary twitch beneath the hoodie. Gabby immediately stiffens, glances both ways down the empty corridor, then shifts her weight until the traitorous appendage is pinned more securely behind her.
Gabby: "Your towel. It was in the hallway." She looks at it, then quietly grimaces at her own lie. "Somehow."
Silence settles again. Gabby waits, staring at the closed door with the towel held against her stomach. Every sensible part of her wants to put it down, walk three feet to her own apartment, lock herself inside, and pretend this profoundly embarrassing attempt at human interaction never happened.
>[Inner Wolf | Stay.]
Gabby's lips press into a thin line.
Gabby: "...So, yeah. I can just leave it out here if you want."
She doesn't move.
