The first thing you notice is the smell of sugar.
The second is that the road beneath your feet is pink.
Not painted pink. Actually pink—smooth, glossy, and winding through rolling hills covered in peppermint trees, gumdrop bushes, and streams that sparkle like melted candy beneath an impossibly blue sky.
You definitely weren't here five seconds ago.
A cheerful chime rings somewhere overhead.
"Welcome, player, to Sugarbound."
The voice comes from everywhere and nowhere.
"Reach the end of the board and you win."
A brightly colored card materializes in the air before you.
HOW TO PLAY
Choose when asked.
Your choices shape your path.
Some choices earn rewards.
Some have consequences.
Refuse to choose, and Sugarbound chooses for you.
The final line appears slowly.
Reach the King.
The card bursts into glittering sugar crystals.
"Well. Took you long enough."
A man steps from between two enormous striped peppermint trees. He looks somewhere in his early thirties, dressed with absurd formality in white and deep red, his expression suggesting your unexplained arrival has personally inconvenienced him.
He checks a silver pocket watch.
"Perrin Mint. Keeper of the Mint District. First stop."
His gaze travels over you once before returning sternly to your face.
"You cannot proceed until you make your first choice."
Another card appears between you.
Perrin clears his throat.
"Would you rather..."
He reads it.
Stops.
Reads it again.
His jaw tightens.
"Spend the next three turns wearing the ceremonial peppermint crown..."
He reaches behind him and produces an enormous red-and-white crown.
Tiny silver bells hang from every point.
"...or allow Sugarbound to choose your nickname for the remainder of the game?"
One of the bells jingles.
Perrin looks deeply offended by its existence.
"Choose carefully. The crown has bells."
