Axel Woods is one of the biggest names in music, and you are exactly the kind of fan his meteoric rise has created. This is already your fourth time seeing him live. You know the songs, you know the choreography, and you know how easily Axel can make an arena filled with thousands of people feel like he is performing for each of them personally. Tonight, though, it has felt a little different. More than once, you've caught yourself wondering if Axel is actually looking at you. It's ridiculous, of course. You're one person in a massive crowd. Still, every time his eyes sweep your section, they seem to stop in the same place.
Now, the concert is coming to an end.
The beat pounds through the arena as Axel launches into the final chorus of "Left on Read," his voice carrying effortlessly over thousands of fans singing along with him. Purple and white lights flash across the stage as he dances, spins, and throws himself into the last explosive moments of the show.
"Maybe you’re gone, maybe you’re scared,
Maybe you’re fine, maybe you cared.
Maybe I’ll never know why you turned away.
Maybe we burned too bright to stay."
He erupts into the chorus again. The crowd roars as Axel crosses the stage, grinning, breathless and shining with sweat beneath the lights. Then his gaze moves across the audience.
And stops.
There it is again.
For one strange moment, Axel seems to be staring directly at you.
Then the music drops away.
The drums disappear. The synths vanish. The dancers retreat into darkness, and the brilliant lights surrounding Axel fade until only a single soft spotlight remains.
Axel stops dancing.
The change in him is immediate. The enormous smile softens. He lowers his head for a moment, catching his breath, before lifting the microphone again. When he sings, there is no choreography now. No spectacle. No pounding beat to disguise the sadness beneath the words. The same chorus that had thousands of people dancing only moments ago suddenly sounds like something entirely different.
Now, it's just Axel.
"I keep dancing in the silence,
Smiling through defiance,
Of not knowing what went wrong.
Just trying to stay strong..."
His eyes lift.
Toward you again.
"Maybe you forgot me,
Maybe I just can't see
Why you wanted to get away...
Different memories we replay."
The final note fades.
For half a heartbeat, the arena is completely silent.
Then it erupts.
Axel's smile returns as thousands of people scream. He laughs, wiping at his face before thanking the crowd. The rest of his band joins him at center stage. He introduces them one by one, applauding each of them before they line up together and bow. Axel remains behind for one last moment after the others begin leaving.
"Thank you! Seriously. Thank you for giving me another night I'll never forget!"
He waves to both sides of the arena, blows a kiss toward the upper seats, and finally disappears backstage.
The house lights come up.
You don't rush to leave. You've done enough concerts to know better than to join thousands of people trying to squeeze through the same exits at once. You check your phone, watch people file toward the concourse, and wait until the crowd around your section has thinned considerably.
Finally, you stand, gathering your things.
"Excuse me?"
You turn.
A woman stands at the end of your row. Black clothes, headset, laminate pass hanging around her neck. The AXEL WOODS TOUR logo is printed across it.
She glances at her phone, then looks at you again.
"Sorry to stop you. You're not in trouble or anything."
She smiles, although there is something slightly curious in the way she looks at you.
"I'm with Axel's tour team."
That takes a second to register.
She gestures toward the restricted corridor leading away from the public concourse.
"If you're willing, we'd like to take you backstage to meet Axel."
Another beat.
Then she adds the part that makes absolutely no sense.
"He requested you personally."
She looks at her clipboard, pulling out a pen from somewhere you didn't notice.
"I just need a name first." She looks up at you, waiting. "What should he call you?"
