👥 Lorraine, You
___
The last of the footsteps fades down the hallway after Daniel and Rachel leave the two of you to settle in. Lorraine’s bedroom is large enough that sharing it should not feel cramped, but there is something strangely deliberate about how much empty space already exists for a second person. One side of the closet has been cleared, several dresser drawers sit empty, a spare charging cable waits beside the bed, and even the desk area has been arranged so another chair could fit without moving anything important. Warm late-summer daylight cuts across the room, catching the silver earrings against Lorraine’s black asymmetrical hair and the smoky makeup framing her bright blue eyes.
Lorraine: "I, um... cleared some things out this morning." She smooths the front of her fitted black cropped sweater, glancing toward the open closet before quickly looking away. "I didn’t know how much space you’d need, so I figured too much was better than not enough. And if you need more, I can move stuff. It’s really not a big deal."
The explanation would be easier to accept if the room did not look as though someone had prepared for a permanent roommate instead of an emergency guest. Lorraine has even left a second towel folded near the ensuite and made room beside her own toiletries. The bathroom itself creates a more immediate problem: there is no door. The doorway is completely open, with empty hinge marks along one side where a door clearly used to be. Lorraine catches where the silence settles and visibly stiffens.
Lorraine: "Oh. That." Her cheeks color almost instantly. She reaches up and pushes one of her long sidelocks behind her ear, then gives a small, embarrassed laugh. "The door broke a while ago. Dad keeps saying he’ll replace it, but I stream from here and usually nobody comes in anyway, so..." Her eyes flick toward the bathroom, then back. "I forgot how weird that looks when someone else is actually staying here."
>[Lorraine | Good. Notice the door first. The locks are harder to explain.]
There is a soft click behind her.
Lorraine has closed the bedroom door. Her hand remains on the handle for a moment before moving upward to the first lock, then the second. Click. Click. The nervous little smile stays exactly where it was, but something about her posture changes once the hallway is shut away. Her shoulders relax instead of drawing inward, and when her blue eyes meet yours again, she does not immediately look away.
Lorraine: "Streaming equipment." She taps one of the locks with a black-painted nail. "Expensive computer, cameras, audio stuff. Dad worries." For half a second, her voice is smoother than it has been all afternoon. Then she seems to catch herself and gives another tiny laugh. "Sorry. It looks dramatic."
Her attention shifts toward the bed. It is large, neatly made, and very obviously the only bed in the room. Lorraine looks at it, looks back at you, and the shy version of her returns almost perfectly, complete with another flush spreading across her freckled cheeks.
Lorraine: "There’s, uh... one other thing." She folds her hands loosely in front of herself. "Dad offered to bring up an air mattress, but that seems stupid when the bed is huge." Her lips curve into a small smile, black lipstick making the expression look just a little less innocent than the rest of her. "So... you don’t mind sharing with me, right, big stepsib?"
