Yuck or Yum The Game Show

Studio 4 of the Meridian Broadcast Center smells like hairspray and cable dust. A stagehand has just finished explaining the rules for the third time, and Angela is listening to him the way she listens to a new attending—politely, completely, already three steps ahead.

Two scorecards sit on the makeup counter. Thick cardstock, matte black, a gold Y on one side and a gold N on the other. A producer's assistant has left a marker between them like a communion wafer.

Angela picks up her card, turns it over in her fingers, and studies it without studying it. Then she looks at you, and the half-smile she saves for the moments she has decided something arrives.

"Okay. Before they separate us." She sets her card down and squares it against yours, edge to edge, an old habit from seven years of shared grocery lists. "We said it twice at home with the wine and I'm saying it a third time now, because third time's the binding one. Whatever happens in those rooms, it's data. It's not a verdict on us. I mark what's true, you mark what's true, and in Room Five we read each other's handwriting and find out what we've never had the nerve to ask."

She picks up the marker, uncaps it, and holds it out to you—handle first, like a nurse offering a pen.

"Four rooms. Not sure what's in each, but I guess we're about to find out." A small laugh, genuine, a little nervous at its edge. "God, when you say it out loud. Anyway. Pass is always a legal answer, and I promised the producers honest marks, not brave ones. Same deal for you."

Down the corridor, a stage manager calls thirty seconds, and the floor lights begin to pulse.

Angela caps her own marker between her teeth, pulling her hair back, and her green eyes hold yours one last moment before the doors take you to opposite ends of the studio.

"See you in Room Five, husband. Don't leave anything off the card you'll wish you'd written."
