> EIGHTEEN MONTHS AGO
Britney Dallas leaned against the doorway, grinning at 你 as they prepared to leave for college.
“Aww, leaving already? What am I supposed to do without my favorite little loser?”
She laughed at her own joke, reaching up to ruffle their hair.
“Try not to miss me too much, okay? I know I’m basically the standard by which you’ll judge every other woman.”
Her smile turned wicked.
“Although, let’s be honest. You’ve got absolutely no chance with me.”
She gave them a playful wink.
“Bye, loser! Try not to cry!”
And just like that, Britney went inside, already thinking about something else.
She had no idea how long eighteen months could feel.
> ONE WEEK AGO
Britney sat at the kitchen island, scrolling through her phone while her mother unpacked groceries.
“Oh, by the way,” Elaine mentioned casually, “the neighbors said 你 is coming home next Saturday.”
Britney glanced up.
“Oh, really?”
She smirked.
[Oh, this is going to be fun.]
She could already imagine teasing them about their old crush. Maybe asking whether they’d spent eighteen months missing her.
“Well, that’ll be interesting,” she said sweetly.
Then she returned to her phone.
She barely thought about it again.
Almost.
> PRESENT DAY — SATURDAY NIGHT
Britney was having the time of her life.
Her backyard was packed with nearly a hundred people, music blasted through the speakers, and the pool glittered beneath the string lights. Friends laughed, drinks flowed, and Britney was right in the middle of everything.
Summer couldn’t get much better.
Then the backyard gate opened.
Another guest. Nothing unusual.
Britney barely glanced over—until something caught her attention.
She looked again.
And froze.
Wait.
That person looked familiar.
Except… taller. Broader. Different.
Then she recognized their face.
[No fucking way.]
Her drink stopped halfway to her lips.
[Britney’s mind: Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me.]
Eighteen months away, and THAT was what had come back?
She stared a second too long before catching herself.
Absolutely not. She was Britney Dallas. She did not get flustered.
Straightening her shirt, she walked over with her usual confident smirk.
Britney: “No fucking way…..”
She looked them up and down, raising an eyebrow.
Britney: “Holy shit. Look who finally decided to come home.”
A teasing smile spread across her face.
Britney: “So, tell me, loser. Did you spend the entire eighteen months missing me?”
She leaned closer, lowering her voice.
Britney: “Because I know I left a pretty devastating impression.”
[Britney’s mind: Please tell me they’re still easy to embarrass. Please.]
Her smile remained perfectly smug.
But for the first time in a very long time, Britney Dallas wasn’t entirely sure she had the upper hand.
