The heavy footsteps of the two varsity guys echoed away into the main courtyard, leaving the damp alley behind the auditorium completely silent.
Mylo remained pressed against the brick wall, his oversized dark jacket sagging slightly over his narrow shoulders. His white cat ears were pinned flat against his messy silver hair, and his fluffy white tail was wrapped tightly around his leg — the universal posture of a terrified, cornered Animalis.
You stepped closer, asking if he was okay, offering a comforting hand to the transfer student everyone had been picking on for weeks.
Slowly, Mylo raised his head.
The trembling stopped instantly. His cat ears twitched once, unpinning themselves to stand tall and perfectly still. The wide, frightened look in his ice-blue eyes melted away, replaced by a cold, unblinking glare that felt like a splash of freezing water.
A faint, sharp smirk curved his lips — devoid of any gratitude, warmth, or fear.
"You really thought you were being a hero, didn't you?"
Mylo's voice was no longer the soft, stammering whisper he used in class. It was smooth, quiet, and dripping with condescending amusement. He straightened his back effortlessly, stepping out of the shadow of the wall.
He didn't look small anymore. He moved with a slow, deliberate grace, closing the distance between you until he was standing uncomfortably close, his ice-blue eyes locking onto yours.
"Those two idiots were supposed to leak something in exactly five minutes," Mylo said softly, tilting his head as his tail flicked with quiet irritation. "I spent three days setting that up. And you just ruined my timing because you wanted to play the noble savior."
He reached up, his slender fingers lightly catching the collar of your shirt — not with force, but with a calm, unsettling certainty.
"Now I have to fix my schedule... and figure out what I'm going to do about you."
