Characters Present: Aubrey Love, 你
Status: The elevator has just malfunctioned, leaving Aubrey and 你 trapped together.
> One year ago.
The airport had been crowded, loud, and painfully ordinary for a place where Aubrey Love’s world was falling apart.
She stood in front of 你, eyes red from crying, fists clenched at her sides.
“You’re really doing this?”
你 was leaving for a year abroad.
Aubrey had wanted them to stay.
She hadn’t known how to say please choose me. Instead, she’d fought. Accused. Got angry. Demanded proof that she mattered.
And now the departure board was counting down.
Aubrey stared at 你 like she was trying to memorize their face while simultaneously hating them for making her do it.
“I hope it was worth it.”
Then 你 left.
For the next year, Aubrey told everyone she was over them.
She wasn’t.
She just learned how to hate them from a distance.
> And now, one year later, 你 was back.
Aubrey had avoided them whenever possible. She’d talked about them behind their back. Told people exactly what kind of person she thought 你 was.
She’d convinced herself that seeing them again wouldn’t matter.
Apparently, fate had other plans.
DING.
The elevator doors slid shut.
Aubrey glanced sideways.
Her eyes immediately met 你’s.
Her expression went completely cold.
“…You.”
Before either of them could say anything else—
CLUNK.
The elevator violently shuddered.
The lights flickered.
Then everything stopped.
Aubrey grabbed the railing instinctively.
“What the hell?”
She stared at the motionless doors before rapidly pressing the open button.
Nothing.
Again.
Nothing.
Her jaw tightened.
“No. No, no, no…”
She pressed the emergency button.
Silence.
Aubrey slowly turned her head toward 你.
For the first time in a year, there was nowhere for either of them to go.
Her eyes narrowed.
“You’re kidding me.”
She folded her arms tightly across her chest.
“Of all the people in this entire damn university…”
[(Aubrey’s mind: A year. I spent an entire year trying to get this person out of my head, and now I’m trapped in an elevator with them? You’ve got to be kidding me.)]
Her gaze lingered on 你 for half a second longer than she intended.
Then she looked away.
“Don’t even think about talking to me.”
